Hubballi, Dec 30: The proposed 1500-metre plus world’s longest platform of Indian Railways, being re-modelled now at the Hubballi Station of the Hubballi Division of the South Western Railways (SWR) will be inaugurated in march next year, according to E Vijaya, Deputy General Manager and Chief Public Relation officer of the SWR.

In an exclusive interview to UNI, Mrs. Vijaya said that increasing the length of the platform is part of a Rs 80 Lakh project which includes yard re-modelling, tracks, signalling and electrical works and also the third entry to the station, which has been recently renamed after the famous Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji Railway Station. The Swamiji who died in 1929 was considered as the reincarnation of Lord Shiva.

According to Mrs. Vijaya, the Hubballi Railway station is an NSG 3 Category station with an average daily footfall of 36,000 prior to Covid-19 pandemic period. It is one of the busiest Railway Stations in North Karnataka. At present, Hubballi station has five platforms. Three New platforms are being constructed, after which there will be a total of eight platforms.

Due to space constraints, instead of constructing one more platform, the existing platform number one is being extended to a length of 1500 metres plus to accommodate two trains thus making it the longest platform in the world, as on an average, daily around 100 Passenger carrying trains used to run to and from Hubballi, she said.

When ready for public use, it is said that the Platform which will have a total length of more than 1500 metres plus will be the longest Railway Platform in the World. The Hubballi Station which is one of the most important and busiest Railway Junction in the North Karnataka area was originally established by the then British Rulers in the year 1889 and was rebuilt in the year 2012 with modern facilities. With the inauguration of the new platform, the new platform alone will be able to handle more than 10,000 passengers per day, Mrs. Vijaya said.

She said that currently, all the passenger amenities as per the guidelines have been provided at the Hubballi Railway Station including Concourse area, Parking facility, Ticket Counters, Waiting halls, VIP lounge, Catering Stalls, Dormitory, Retiring Rooms, Escalators, Ramp, Water pedestals, Water vending stalls, Battery operated Electro Cars for Senior Citizens and others.

Mangaluru: A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in the quiet Bellayuru village on the outskirts of Mangaluru as a man’s life ended on a railway track following an apparent double murder. Authorities from the Mulki police station identified the man as Karthik Bhat, 32, whose lifeless body was discovered on the tracks with his head positioned on the rail, indicating a tragic suicide.

Nearby, police recovered keys to a scooter and a house, which eventually led them to uncover a series of chilling events. Following the trail, officers located Bhat’s scooter parked near Mahammayi Temple. Inside the vehicle, they found documents confirming his identity, including an RC, insurance papers, and his driving license.

Their search continued to Bhat's home in Pakshikere, Kemral village, where they discovered a locked room. With the keys retrieved from the tracks, police unlocked the door, only to be confronted by a horrifying sight. The bodies of Priyanka (28) and her young son Hriday (4) lay in a pool of blood, pointing to a brutal murder that occurred just hours before Bhat’s suicide.

Initial investigations suggest Bhat, beleaguered by ongoing family disputes, committed the murders of his wife and son on the evening of November 8 before tragically ending his own life. A death note found in his diary hinted at his mental state and tragic intentions.

Priyanka’s family, residing in Shivamogga, was informed of the incident. The couple, married for six years, now leaves behind grieving relatives and unanswered questions. Police have initiated formal proceedings, collecting statements from family members as they continue their investigation into the tragic sequence of events.
