Mangaluru, Sept 22: Local residents and activists of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) have demanded the scrapping of NITK toll plaza at Surathkal.

Leading a protest on Thursday against the pathetic condition of National Highway 66 between Kulur-Surathkal and the collection of toll at NITK, DYFI State president Muneer Katipalla said the toll plaza at NITK was illegal.
He said there should be a minimum distance of 50 km between two toll plazas. However, there are two plazas within a distance of 10 km, one at NITK and the other at Hejmady, he said.
He said that even though the stretch of highway between Kulur and NITK is pathetic, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) does not hesitate to collect hefty tolls.
Mr. Katipalla demanded that the NITK toll plaza be closed down and the NHAI make the highway motorable.
Several groups and individuals, including Mangaluru City Corporation councillors Revathi Puthran and Dayanand Shetty, and DYFI district president B.K. Imtiyaz, took part in the protest.
