Mysuru, Oct 20: Clarifying that there would be no rethinking in celebrating the birth anniversary of legendary Mysuru ruler and India’s first freedom fighter Tipu Sultan, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara has said that Tipu Jayanti would be celebrated on the same scale as last year.
Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, he ruled out the possibility of the JD(S)-Congress coalition government reviewing the previous Congress government’s decision to celebrate the occasion. “If the JD(S) has any reservations on holding Tipu Jayanti, we will try to convince them,” he said.
When his attention was drawn to Mysuru MP Pratap Simha’s opposition to holding Tipu Jayanti, Mr. Parameshwara said it was the BJP’s ideological stand to oppose Tipu Sultan. “It is their view. We have taken a stand to celebrate Tipu Jayanti. There is an ideological difference between us and them.”
He said historical accounts showed that Tipu Sultan was secular. He was not only associated with SringeriMutt and the Nanjangud temple, but also kept Purnaiah, a Hindu, as his Dewan, the Congress leader said.
