Mangaluru, Oct 10: The 10-day Mangaluru Dasara began at Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple on Thursday. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will take part in the festival on October 14.
The festival began with the installation of Sharada and Navadurga idols.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Karnataka Bank M.S. Mahabaleshwara participated in ceremony related to installation of idols. Many devotees had assembled at the temple to witness the installation ceremony.
The idol of Sharada was brought in procession led by several tiger dance groups.
The Sharada idol was installed along with Navadurga idols at the air-conditioned hall. The temple has been fully decked up for the event. The Navaratri festival began in Mangaladevi temple with prayer to Lord Ganapati that was followed by presentation of silver and panchaloha kavacha to Dwaja Stamba of the temple by the Mulihitlu Games team.
The nine-day long cultural programmes at the temple was inaugurated by Mayor Bhaskar K. The festival also commenced at Durgaparameshwari temples in Kateel, Bappanadu and Adhyapady and in Annapoorneshwari temple in Kodyadka near Moodbidri.
The city has been illuminated for the festival. There was brisk sale of flowers and other pooja materials in the market. All the temples had cultural programmes in the evening with some of the them hosting Yakshagana performances.
