Bengaluru, Jun 13: The victory of Sowmya Reddy in prestigious Jayanagar Constituency takes the tally of women legislators in the new Karnataka Legislative Assembly to eight.

(from top to left) Sowmya Reddy, Lakshmi R Hebbalkar, M Roopakala, Kaneez Fatima, Anjali Hemant Nimbalkar, Shashikala Annasaheb Jolle, K Poornima, Roopali Santosh Naik.

On May 15 when results of 222 assembly constituencies were announced seven only women had registered victory – four from Congress and three from BJP. The poll in Jayanagar was rescheduled for June 11 following the death of BJP candidate. The results were announced today. Sowmya Reddy, daughter of former home minister Ramalinga Reddy defeated her closest rival BN Prahalad of BJP by a margin of 2889 votes.

The other women Congress MLAs in the assembly are Lakshmi R Hebbalkar from Belgaum Rural; M Roopakala, daughter of seven-time Kolar MP K H Muniyappa; Kaneez Fatima (wife of late Qamarul Islam), who represented Gulbarga Uttar; and Anjali Hemant Nimbalkar from Khanapur.

The three women MLAs of BJP are Shashikala Annasaheb Jolle from Nippani; K Poornima (Hiriyur); and Roopali Santosh Naik (Karwar).

Of the total 2,655 candidates in the fray for 222 seats, elections to which were held on May 12, only 216 were women.

Major parties, like in previous state elections, did not prefer to give tickets to women candidates. While the Congress fielded 15 women candidates, the BJP fielded six, and the Janata Dal-Secular only four.

“This is the reason why we need Women's Reservation Bill. This is the problem with every party. There is no point saying that I gave 15 tickets, and BJP gave six. The fact is that both numbers are less,” All India Mahila Congress President Sushmita Dev said.

She said that affirmative action is required when social or political factors don't allow empowerment of a section of society.

"When you are not doing something naturally, you are compelled to do by law," she said, adding that election after election, every party was falling short of women candidates.

"... men don't want to share space. They are just not willing to share the political space with women."

Dev said she feels that the political empowerment of women cannot be judged by one important post a member of the fairer sex is holding.

"You cannot looking at political empowerment of women by just looking at one Chief Minister and one Defence Minister. That's a fallacy.

In 2013, only 29 women were given tickets by the three major parties. The JD-S and Congress had allotted just 11 tickets each to women candidates, while the BJP had given to seven. Sixty-seven women contested as independents. And of the total 175 women who contested, only six had won.

According to the Election Commission, the number of women voters has increased to 2.44 crore from 2.13 crore in 2013.

In 2013, Umashree was one of the three women MLAs of Congress and was made a Minister in Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s Cabinet and expectedly given charge of Women and Child Development Department.

Dev agreed that though WCD was an important department, it was unfair to assign it to women only.

"A lot of things depend on that department... but it should open its doors to men also. It shouldn't be typecast. It shouldn't be a norm that it only goes to a woman," she said.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Friday to discuss key issues affecting the security and development of the region. The meeting highlighted several urgent concerns, ranging from counter-terrorism measures to infrastructure upgrades.

During the meeting, Chowta strongly advocated for establishing a National Investigation Agency (NIA) Centre in Mangaluru. He pointed out the city’s vulnerability to threats such as Islamic radicalisation, sleeper cells, and the activities of groups like SDPI and PFI. Citing the unrest during the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests, Chowta emphasized the ability of radical groups to incite large-scale disruptions. He argued that Mangaluru’s strategic coastal location necessitates an NIA Centre to bolster counter-terrorism operations and ensure regional security.

Chowta also discussed the Indian Coast Guard Academy, sanctioned for Mangaluru in 2020. He highlighted its potential to enhance India’s maritime security through advanced training in coastal defence, disaster response, and surveillance. Situated near the Arabian Sea and Mangalore Port, the academy is strategically positioned to address challenges in regions like Lakshadweep and the Maldives, aligning with India’s geostrategic interests.

The MP proposed the establishment of a Sainik School in Mangaluru to nurture leadership, discipline, and patriotism among local youth. He emphasized that such an institution would not only provide quality education but also act as a feeder for the armed forces, enhancing the region’s defence readiness. Chowta suggested pairing the school with a military installation, further strengthening coastal defence capabilities and supporting national security goals.

Addressing infrastructure, Chowta underscored the need to improve the Mangaluru-Bengaluru railway and road networks. He argued that enhanced connectivity would unlock the region’s economic potential, streamline logistics for New Mangalore Port, and support key industries such as fisheries, agriculture, and manufacturing. Additionally, upgraded infrastructure would boost trade, tourism, and employment opportunities.

On economic development, Chowta urged the revival of cooperative banks under the Ministry of Cooperatives. He proposed increased funding and loan facilities for businesses and farmers to enhance financial inclusion and regional economic stability. Strengthening fisheries cooperatives, he noted, would provide local fishermen with better access to financial services, loans, and insurance, improving productivity and security.

The MP’s discussions reflected a comprehensive vision for balancing security, infrastructure, and economic growth in Dakshina Kannada, aligning with both regional and national priorities.

Mangaluru: In a shocking case of fraud, six individuals posing as officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) swindled a beedi businessman of Rs 25 to 30 lakh in cash and five mobile phones at Kolnad in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada on Friday night.

The incident came to light after Mohammed Iqbal, 27, lodged a complaint with the police, stating that his father, a beedi trader, was targeted by the imposters.

According to the complaint, the six accused arrived at the businessman’s residence around 8:10 pm in a car with Tamil Nadu registration plates. Claiming to be ED officials, they announced that they had orders to search the house and began confiscating mobile phones from the family members.

The fraudsters reportedly discovered Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh in cash, which the businessman had kept aside for business purposes. They claimed that keeping such a large amount was illegal and threatened to arrest him unless he complied. By 10:30 pm, the group left the house, instructing the businessman to submit documents at the ED office in Bengaluru to reclaim the money.

Later, upon discussing the incident with his family, Iqbal realized that the individuals were not ED officials but fraudsters who had impersonated authorities to rob them.

A case has been registered at Vittal Police Station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. An investigation is underway, and the police have promised swift action to apprehend the culprits.

Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Yathish N, along with senior officers, visited the crime scene and assured the family that the perpetrators would be brought to justice at the earliest.

Udupi: In a shocking case of investment fraud, a 72-year-old man from Udupi, Karnataka, lost Rs 49 lakh after falling prey to a deceptive stock market scheme. The incident highlights the growing menace of online scams targeting unsuspecting individuals.

According to the complaint filed by Francis Castelino, an unknown individual added his son's mobile number to a WhatsApp group titled "Stock Market Navigation." The group shared stock market insights and promised lucrative returns, convincing Castelino’s son to invest. Trusting the information, the son persuaded his father to make substantial investments.

On December 30, 2024, Castelino transferred Rs 17,00,000, his wife contributed Rs 10,50,000, and their son invested Rs 21,50,000 to the bank account provided by the fraudsters.

However, when Castelino attempted to withdraw the invested money, he and his family were pressured to reinvest further. Realizing that the promised profits and their principal amount were not forthcoming, the family approached the police for help.

A case has been registered at the Udupi CEN Police Station under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act and 318(4) BNS. Investigations are underway to track down the culprits and recover the lost funds.
