Now, racist China starts targeting ethnic Kazakh Muslims

Hong Kong, Nov 25: After a massive crackdown on the Islam-following Uyghur community in its Xinjiang province, China is now targeting the ethnic Kazakhs living on its side of the border with Kazakhstan - again on grounds of religion with the objective of forcing them to stop following their Islamic customs, including prayers five times a day.

According to reports, which are usually difficult to come by from Xinjiang the crackdown is happening in the Ili Kazakh, Tacheng and Altey prefectures of Xinjiang, situated along the border with Kazakhstan and home to around 1.5 million Kazakhs. Very little is reported on this community, many of whom moved to China in the last few decades, looking for a better life. However, all is not good for many of them.

Since the last one year, the Kazakh community in Xinjiang have noticed that Chinese security agencies have been imposing restrictions on their way of life, especially concerning their religious customs. In June 2016, a popular Kazakh Imam Akmet was detained by the police in Xinjiang. According to Radio Free Asia, while this Imam soon died in police custody, by July 2016, more than 100 of his friends and relatives had been rounded up by the local police.

Again on June 10, 2017, it was reported that at least 10 Kazakhs were arrested by the police in Karamay City of Xinjiang for having "close ties" ties with Uyghurs. Now, in the latest report by Radio Free Asia, Chinese authorities in Tekes county of Ili Kazakh Prefecture searched the homes of more than 30 thousand Kazakh families in the last week of October and confiscated Korans, prayer mats and beads and other religious articles. According to this report, the presence of security forces have increased in the area, with the police putting on a watch list all Kazakhs who returned to China after a long stay abroad.

Separately, the Chinese authorities have also issued orders to ethnic Kazakh Chinese nationals to hand over their passports. Local ethnic minorities in Xinjiang are also under pressure to attend flag raising ceremonies with Chinese flags and where the national anthem is played.

For decades, the largest ethnic group of Xinjiang, the Uyghurs, have been facing severe persecution. Things have worsened for them in the last few years with the government imposing large scale restrictions on them including denying them the basic right to practise their religion. It now appears that Chinese security agencies have similarly begun targeting the Kazakhs.

China and Kazakhstan share cordial relations and the Kazakh government is positively disposed towards China. However, there is a growing resentment against increasing Chinese presence in the country. For instance, in early 2016 impending land reforms that would give the Chinese the right to purchase land in Kazakhstan led to one of the biggest protests in the country in decades.

Though the Kazakh government has tried to keep this under wraps Chinese human rights violations against the ethnic Kazakhs, civil rights activists and journalists in Kazakhstan are using the social media to raise awareness on this issue and this June, a Kazakh writers' organisation gave a call for Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev to take up the matter with his Chinese counterpart.

It is unlikely that Kazakhstan will consider it worthwhile to raise this issue with China, which in the recent years has invested billions of dollars in the country, according to Kazakh community leaders in Xinjiang. They say that if things continue the way they going the Community would find itself in a worse position than the Uyghurs as China pushes ahead with its crackdown on Islamic rituals and customs.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has killed or captured 69 terrorists linked to the Israeli spy agency Mossad during a major counterterrorism drill in the country's southeast, its spokesman says.

General Ahmad Shafaei, the spokesman for the “Martyrs of Security” drill, said Friday that a total of 23 terrorists have been killed and another 46 arrested in various clean-up operations ever since the IRGC Ground Force launched it in the Sistan and Baluchestan province on November 1.

Seven terrorists have also turned themselves in during the period.

“The undeniable fact about terrorists is that they rely on arrogant powers, particularly the intelligence service of the wicked and vicious Zionist regime," Shafaei said.

“Unfortunately, weapons and munitions at terrorists’ disposal are among the most sophisticated ones in the world. This accounts for their heavy dependence.”

The official stated that several members of the disbanded terror teams were non-Iranian nationals, who had been hired by foreign intelligence agencies to carry out acts of sabotage and terror inside Iran.

In a most recent operation, six terrorists were arrested and four others were eliminated, three of whom were non-Iranians, he added.

On October 26, ten members of Iran's law enforcement forces were killed in a terrorist attack in the Gohar Kuh district of Taftan in the Sistan and Baluchestan province.

The so-called Jaish al-Adl terrorist group claimed responsibility for the assault, which was one of the deadliest in the province in recent months.

The group has carried out numerous terrorist attacks in Iran, primarily in Sistan and Baluchestan.

Its tactics include the abduction of border guards as well as targeting civilians and police stations within the province to incite chaos and disorder.

In January, Iran launched a military operation during which the headquarters of the Pakistan-based terrorist group was targeted in missile strikes, destroying its infrastructure.

The UN humanitarian coordinator for Lebanon has warned that the “picture of life in Lebanon remains grim,” highlighting an "alarming" level of human suffering and significant humanitarian consequences due to the ongoing Israeli carnage.

Imran Riza, the UN Deputy Special Coordinator and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL), provided a stark overview of the Arab country's dire circumstances in a statement released on Monday.

“The current picture of life in Lebanon remains grim. Yesterday, airstrikes reportedly killed 23 people, including seven children, in the village of Aalmat in Mount Lebanon,” Riza said on X.

An airstrike in the city of Tyre on the same day resulted in the tragic deaths of five siblings from a single family, all of whom had special needs, according to his statement.

He added that in the last week, Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 241 individuals and left 642 others injured in Lebanon, as reported by the Ministry of Health.

“In the past month, more than 185,000 people have fled their homes in their search for safety within the country, bringing the total to over 870,000 people internally displaced,” Riza said

The UN official highlighted that numerous individuals, including the elderly and those with health issues, are staying behind while witnessing the ruins of their ancestral homes.

He urged for the swift safeguarding of civilian people and infrastructure, emphasizing the necessity to uphold international humanitarian law and end the ongoing violence.

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that Israeli forces bombed a house in the town of Maydoun in Bekaa on Monday night, killing three people and destroying the house.

Earlier, Israel bombed the northern town of Ain Yaaqoub, killing at least 14 people.

The killings came as Israeli military continued to pound Lebanon, bombing shops selling electrical appliances in the southern city of Tyre and carrying out air raids on the towns of Shamshtar in eastern Baalbek and Roumine in southern Nabatieh.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Health said Israeli attacks killed at least 54 people across the country on Monday.

Israel’s merciless attacks continue despite calls from the UN Security Council for an immediate ceasefire and directives from the International Court of Justice urging measures to prevent genocide and alleviate the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and Lebanon.

In Lebanon, at least 3,243 people have been killed and 14,134 others wounded in Israeli attacks since the war on Gaza began on October 7, 2023.

The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah opened a support front for Palestinians in Gaza only a day after the Israeli regime unleashed its genocidal war on the besieged territory.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has instructed the Hindu Religious Endowment Department to submit a proposal for constructing a gold chariot for the presiding deity of the state, Chamundeshwari, official sources said on Monday.

The directive follows a request from Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Dinesh Gooligowda, who highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the Chamundeshwari Temple on Chamundi Hill in Mysuru, which dates back to the 12th century AD.

Gooligowda noted that the existing wooden chariot, donated by devotees from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, has deteriorated over time.

“Devotees have expressed their desire to organise a ‘rathotsava’ using a gold chariot for Goddess Chamundeshwari. This proposal has been under consideration for some time, with an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore,” the MLC said.

He emphasised that the government’s financial involvement would not be required, as devotees are willing to contribute towards making the chariot a reality.

Gooligowda proposed a deadline for the 2025 Dasara festival for the completion of the chariot, ensuring it is ready for the grand procession featuring the idol of Chamundeshwari.
