Mangaluru, Aug 12: During an interaction programme with severe chronic renal patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis at Government Wenlock Hospital under a pilot project launched by the state government, the patients revealed that their health conditions had largely improved with the initiation of peritoneal dialysis which could be done at home on their own.

Under the project initiated by the health department, peritoneal dialysis kits were distributed to 20 needy beneficiaries by Wenlock Hospital, which were selected by medical doctors based on their health conditions. This form of dialysis does not require the patients to visit the hospital for each dialysis cycle.

After selection, trained coordinators had visited the patients at their homes to teach them the right method for dialysis. Using the peritoneal kits, patients can themselves go through the dialysis cycle thrice a day, for 10-15 minutes each time.

The selected patients have been undergoing peritoneal dialysis since a year after the kits were distributed to them.

Speaking at the interaction programme organised by Wenlock Hospital in the city on Wednesday, one of the patients Baby Shetty from Udupi district said that she had been undergoing haemo-dialysis earlier, which had rendered her weak and incapacitated. “Before switching to peritoneal dialysis, I was unable to do any physical work or even walk at times. But since a year, it has been easier after switching to peritoneal dialysis. My strength has regained, my health has improved and I feel better with the peritoneal dialysis, which can be done at home. This has been helpful, as there is no necessity to make frequent visits to the hospital, except once a month,” she said.

She requested that the health department should continue to provide medicines and dialysis fluid free of cost to patients like her.

Another chronic renal patient Henry Pinto from Belthangady taluk, manages to run an auto-rickshaw after beginning to undergo peritoneal dialysis. “From a year, it is better to cope with peritoneal dialysis cycles unlike before with haemo-dialysis. I have better health with peritoneal dialysis and face almost no difficulty, since peritoneal dialysis is convenient to do it myself,” he said.

He requested that a doctor should be made available to attend to the patients once in a week, since a nephrologist was unable outside of Mangaluru city. “At present, we make a monthly visit to the Wenlock Hospital. But a nephrologist should be available for consultation weekly once in case of infection,” he told Legislative Assembly Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa and health minister U T Khader, who were present on the dias during the programme.

Similarly, an elderly patient Lalitha from Madikeri, Kodagu district, said that the peritoneal dialysis scheme was a boon to chronic renal patients, such as her, which was otherwise difficult to cope with. She requested the health minister that the scheme should be extended to more beneficiaries.

The first peritoneal dialysis centre in a government hospital in Dakshina Kannada was inaugurated at Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru, by health minister U T Khader in March 2014.

Udupi: The police have booked a case against the office-bearers of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) for holding 'Chalo Belagavi - Ambedkar Jatha’ without permission and thereby disrupting the movement of vehicles on national highway at Hejmadi.

The SDPI held a jatha on December 10 from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm. According to the police, the group had unlawfully gathered near the National Highway toll gate in Hejmadi. Despite instructions from the PSI to disperse, they failed to act and disrupted the traffic on the national highway.

The police have booked case against SDPI state secretary Riyaz Kadumbu, leaders Haneef Muloor, Nooruddin Mallaru, Firoz Kanchinadka, Thoufeeq Uchila, Majeed Uchila, Ibrahim Kanchinadka and others under Sections 57, 189(2), 189(3), 281, 285 and 190 of the BNS.

About 75 to 100 people commenced a procession --without obtaining permission -- in cars and two-wheelers shouting slogans. They caused inconvenience to the vehicles moving on the national highway, police said.

The jatha, which was launched in Udupi on December 10, is expected to cover Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Davanagere, Haveri, Koppal, Bagalkote, Hubballi, Dharwad and reach Belagavi on December 16.

In a significant milestone, the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School in Newpadpu, Harekala, has introduced a bilingual Kannada-English medium this academic year, a move spearheaded by Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba. The school has so far received 13 admissions for its Class 1 bilingual program.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the state government, which approved 38 schools across the district to launch bilingual mediums. Expressing his delight, Hajabba shared that he had been advocating for a bilingual school for years. "The bilingual medium will greatly benefit students in this region who otherwise rely on private schools. However, we currently face a shortage of classrooms. Construction of two additional classrooms is underway, and once completed, we expect higher admissions," he said.

The school had previously been permitted to introduce LKG and UKG classes in the last academic year. According to the school’s headmistress, Rajeshwari, while the pre-primary sections have seen good enrolment, the bilingual Class 1 faced challenges, securing only 13 students. She attributed this to the late notification of permission, which arrived a month after the academic year began, leading many children to enroll elsewhere.

Rajeshwari remains optimistic about the future. "We expect better admissions next academic year as awareness about bilingual education at this government school grows," she said, adding that the classroom shortage will soon be addressed.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) Venkatesha Subraya Patagara noted that bilingual schools across Dakshina Kannada have generally received a positive response, with some schools enrolling more than 100 students. The effort to offer bilingual education in government schools marks a step forward in providing affordable, quality education to underserved regions.

Angry BJP lawmakers stormed Assembly Speaker U T Khader’s chambers at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, escalating tensions after the ruling Congress turned the tables on the saffron party over the Panchamasali Lingayat community’s reservation issue.

The friction began when Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar, a Panchamasali Lingayat, was allowed to criticise the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government’s controversial decision to scrap the 4 per cent Muslim quota, reallocating it equally to Lingayats and Vokkaligas. Kashappanavar slammed the BJP’s move, accusing it of being a mere election gimmick.

“The previous BJP government created two new reservation categories, 2C for Vokkaligas and 2D for Lingayats, just before the 2023 Assembly elections,” Kashappanavar said. “When challenged in the Supreme Court, the BJP government admitted it would not implement the decision. They announced it for votes but backtracked in court, misleading Panchamasali seer Basava Jaya Mrityunjaya Swami.”

Adding fuel to the fire, Kashappanavar alleged that RSS members had incited violence during a protest for enhanced Panchamasali Lingayat reservation. This claim enraged BJP lawmakers, who demanded the comment be expunged. However, Speaker Khader permitted Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda to read aloud the BJP government’s affidavit to the Supreme Court.

“If the Panchamasali Lingayat community has faced injustice, it is because of the BJP,” Gowda declared, sparking further protests from the opposition. BJP leaders accused Khader of being “one-sided” and disregarding a point of order raised by BJP MLA V Sunil Kumar.

When Khader adjourned the session for lunch, the confrontation boiled over. Opposition Leader R Ashoka, BJP state president B Y Vijayendra, MLAs Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, Sunil Kumar, and others barged into Khader’s chambers. Chaos ensued as shouting and hollering echoed through the halls, prompting marshalls to intervene.

“The Speaker was warned that if he continued behaving this way, we would boycott the session,” Narayan stated afterward.
