Mangalore, Jan 27: If everything goes as per plan, Shiradi Ghat stretch of Mangalore-Bangalore highway (NH 75) will get a new coating from March, said Dr H C Mahadevappa, Minister for Public Works Department.
He was speaking to media persons at Gundia after the road inspection work on Shiradi Ghats on Sunday.
He said the Union ministry of road transport and highways has approved the proposal of road coating of 47 kms of road stretch on Shiradi Ghat at an estimated cost of Rs 95.54 crore which will be permanent solution for the road that is battered during the monsoon.
While Rs 49.1 crore will be spent to strengthen and reconstruct 33.3 kms of road, rigid concrete pavement will be laid on 13.6 kms of stretch on middle part of the ghat at an estimated cost of Rs 46.43 crore, the minister said adding that the tender process for the work is in progress.
Since the fourlaning work would take at least 18 -20 months to complete, the existing road has been repaired by filling potholes and asphalting at a cost of Rs 5 crore. Once the fourlaning work is started, vehicles on Mangalore – Bangalore will be diverted via Charmadi ghat. In the meantime, suggestions have been sought from technical expert from Indian Institute of Science Prof Srinivas Murthy, who has given three alternative suggestions for the improvement of Charmadi ghat to facilitate the movement of excessive vehicles. A total of 39 spots have been identified on Charmadi ghat, which will be widened immediately with soil lining method, Mahadevappa said.
Since Shiradi ghat region receives an average of 5,000mm to 7,000mm rain, the road gets damaged very often. Lab analysis pointed out that even the jelly stones used for asphaltation absorb water and leads to road damage. Hence, the state government has decided to convert the road into fourlane with asphalt and concrete, the minister said adding that tenders have been floated for the development of 27 kms road stretch at Sampaje on Mangalore – Kodagu route.
