Sept 28: Rapper Pitbull used his private jet to bring cancer patients from Puerto Rico to the U.S. mainland to continue their chemo treatments in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, which ravaged the island.
The musician didn’t announce his good deed on social media, but congresswoman Jenniffer Gonzalez tweeted her thanks to him Tuesday.
“Thanks to singer @pitbull for lending private plane to transfer cancer patients from Puerto Rico to the United States so that they can take their chemo,” she wrote in Spanish,
Pitbull did tell E! News, “Thank God we’re blessed to help. Just doing my part.”
Hurricane Maria flooded streets and damaged buildings all over Puerto Rico, and officials say it could take six months or more to restore power to all 3.5 million residents.
Only 11 of the 69 hospitals there had fuel and power as of Tuesday, and nearly half of the residents don’t have usable drinking water.
Two people died at an intensive care unit in San Juan after it ran out of diesel, according to CNN, and many more deaths are expected from cholera and other diseases if clean drinking water can’t be provided until the infrastructure can be rebuilt.
Jennifer Lopez announced this week she is donating $1 million to hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico, where she still hasn’t heard from some of her family affected by Maria.
Puerto Rican hip-hop star Daddy Yankee also is donating $1 million to the island’s needs.
"We’re running out of food, we’re running out of provisions, we’re running out of gas, we’re running out of medicines," Daddy Yankee wrote on Instagram. "So this is a call to action to the international community to act now. We need your help more than ever."
