Pregnant woman set on fire for dowry; hubby, in-laws absconding

Belagavi, Aug 2: A pregnant woman was set on fire allegedly by her husband and in-laws for not getting farm land as dowry in Tapasi village in Gokak taluk on Wednesday.

Belagavi Police have registered a dowry case against Siddappa Magdum, a farmer and four of his relatives.

Acting on a complaint by the victim’s father, the police booked Siddappa Magdum for setting his wife, Anasuya (27), on fire with help of his relatives.

All the five accused are absconding.

Anasuya, who has suffered 90 % burns, is critical, according to doctors. She was shifted to the district hospital from the Gokak taluk hospital in the afternoon.

Anasuya was born in Talakatnal village in Gokak taluk. She was married to Siddappa Magdum four years ago. The couple have an 18-month-old son. She is pregnant with her second child.

Siddappa Magdum was pestering Anasuya for farm land and gold. He had beaten her up on several occasions before, forcing her for dowry, the police said.

The police hope to arrest the accused soon.
