Mangalore, Aug 23: Officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mangalore have managed to nab the prime accused in connection with the red sandalwood smuggling case on Friday.
Hashim, who is the joint director of a Bangalore-based company Berakah Excim, was nabbed at an apartment located in Jalahalli in Bangalore. The company is owned by Samuel Arul Das, another accused in the smuggling case.
Samuel and another accused Ganesh were arrested by DRI officials on Wednesday.
The accused involved in the case were trying to illegally smuggle around 16.90 tonnes of red sandalwood in a container via New Mangalore Port in a vessel bound for UAE. The sandalwood that was being smuggled was valued at around Rs 6.79 crores.
It is said that Hashim has been charged with facilitating the replacement of soaps and detergent from the container with red sandalwood. The container was then transported to Mangalore.
Hashim was produced in court in Friday.
