Lucknow, Feb 12: Hundreds of students on Monday took to the streets in Allahabad town, pelting stones and torching a bus, to protest the brutal lynching of a Dalit law student by a group of people following an argument at a restaurant.
The students, from Allahabad University and other degree colleges in the city, laid siege to the DM's office demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.
Police sources said processions were taken out by irate mobs of students in different parts of the town. Stones were pelted on passing vehicles and a bus was torched on Bank Road.
Additional security personnel had been rushed to town from nearby areas to maintain order, sources said.
Police said that one of the accused in the murder, a waiter at the restaurant, has been arrested, while a hunt was on to nab three others, one of whom is a railway employee.
The victim, identified as Dileep Kumar Saroj, a student at Allahabad University, was hit repeatedly with belts, sticks and bricks by assailants outside the restaurant on Saturday night.
Saroj, who was rushed to the hospital, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.
A CCTV at the restaurant captured the entire incident. The footage showed some people repeatedly hitting Saroj with bricks and sticks. The footage showed that the attackers kept hitting Dileep even after he lay prostrate on the ground.
The incident took a political turn when Opposition parties raised the issue in the state Assembly on Monday and accused the BJP government of failing to ensure the safety of Dalits.
BSP supremo Mayawati rushed a party delegation to the native village of the victim and offered financial help.
