Protest erupts in Byndoor over Akshata’s death, IGP visits spot

Udupi, Jun 18: Hundreds of students and local residents on Thursday staged a protest in Byndoor town against the suspected murder of a Akshata Devadiga, a II PU science student.

17-year-old Akshata, a resident of Hanberu, was found dead under suspicious circumstances near a temple in Ottinene forest area on Wednesday evening, hours after she started walking towards her home from the junior college in Byndoor.

Even though the police have not yet found out the exact cause of the death, local residents believe that she was strangled to death by some miscreants.

“Police should take swift action in the case. We would not remain silent till the culprits are caught," said Abdullah, a protestor.

A majority of the agitators were the students of Byndoor junior college, where Akshata was studying. The protesters slogans blocked road for some time and raised slogans against police too.

Residents of Byndoor observed an undeclared bandh in the morning in solidarity with the agitating students and aggrieved parents of the victim.

"This is not the first time that a college girl has been targeted in our area. We would continue our fight for justice,” said Ram Kumar, a PU student, recalling the unsolved case of Ratna Kottari, a was found dead under suspicious circumstances after she went missing on her way home from the Shiroor college last year.

The protesters demanded a high level probe into the death of Akshata and urged the police to consider it a case of murder.

Meanwhile, Amrit Paul, the Inspector General of Police (Western Range), paid a visit to the spot where the girl's body was found.

Later, speaking to media persons, Mr Paul said that two teams were already formed to investigate the case. “I have asked to speed up the investigation. Once the post-mortem report is out the cause of the death will be known,” he said.

Mandya: The Deputy Superintendent of Police of Nagamangala town in Mandya district has been suspended for "negligence and dereliction of duty" in connection with the clashes that broke out between two groups during a Lord Ganesh idol procession, police said on Friday.

This is the second suspension of a police officer over the clashes on September 11 following which mobs went on a rampage targeting several shops and vehicles leading to tension here.

The situation in the town has since returned to normalcy and most of the shops have started operating. However, adequate security forces continued to be stationed here as a precautionary measure, according to police.

Sumeeth A R, DySP (Nagamangala), was suspended on Thursday for negligence and dereliction of duty, Mandya Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baldandi told PTI.

"He (Sumeeth) was not present at the spot nor was he at the police headquarters when the incident occurred. He arrived late at the spot despite the sensitive nature of events," he said.

Earlier, Police Inspector Ashok Kumar posted at Nagamangala town police station was suspended for dereliction of duty in connection with the violence.

A total of 55 people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to police, an argument broke out between two groups, when the Ganesh idol procession by devotees from Badarikoppalu village reached a place of worship on September 11, and some miscreants hurled stones, which escalated the situation.

The police had used mild force to disperse the crowd to control the situation.
