Bengaluru, Oct 27: All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Rahul Gandhi’s call for protests outside CBI offices across states on Friday failed to enthuse the party’s elected representatives and workers in Bengaluru.
The call was given to oppose the Centre’s decision to send Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director Alok Verma on leave after divesting him of his powers.
Congress MLAs and BBMP corporators skipped the protest despite the diktat from the high command to participate. The lukewarm response from party workers forced AICC general secretary Karnataka incharge KC Venugopal to exit the venue quickly. Former legislators VR Sudarshan, BL Shankar and AB Malakaraddi took part in the protest.
The agitation began at 11.30am and went on for about an hour, during which party workers shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre for meddling in CBI’s affairs.
“Modi transferred the CBI director at night to hide his misdeeds pertaining to the Rafale agreement, and by doing so, he has accepted that there’s something fishy in the deal,” Venugopal alleged.
The country’s premier investigating agency lost its credibility due to the Centre’s attitude towards it, Venugopal said while urging the latter to reinstate Verma as CBI director.
Meanwhile, former chief minister Siddaramaiah took to Twitter to criticise PM Modi for the turmoil in CBI while accusing him of being autocratic. “The recent events related to #CBI is just another manifestation of @narendramodi's autocratic rule. @BJP4India feels they are entitled to destroy the democratic pillars. Ppl (People) are just clueless about the lawlessness & have lost faith & confidence in the system (sic),” he tweeted.
