Mangalore, Dec 28: Coming down heavily against instigators of moral policing and 'goondagiri' in Dakshina Kannada, district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai said that the perpetrators of such crimes would be severely dealt with and appropriate action would be taken against them.
Addressing mediapersons at a press conference here on Saturday, he stressed that the Congress would not allow any scope for those indulging in moral policing in the district and take necessary action against such instances. There are antisocial and anti-communal elements in every religion.
No person will be spared at any cost irrespective of religion or caste, he warned, adding that he had discussed with the Additional Superintendent of Police in this regard.
Speaking in the light of an extortion bid on two medical students and two incidents of attack on students from inter-faith communities, he said that the district Congress committee strictly condemned any instance of assault on students.
If the concerned police officers become negligent in their duty to take action against the perpetrators of crimes, disciplinary action will also be taken against them. Leniency will not be shown to any perpetrator affiliated to any organisation, he stressed.
On being asked whether the Goonda Act would be invoked on the arrested in connection with Deralakatte forced sex filming case, Mr Rai said that it was being seriously considered. Strict action will be taken against repeat offenders, he said.
Dismissing the claim that any pressure was yielded by political leaders in favour of the criminals, he said that he would not stand by any organisation indulging anti-communal activities.
Renaming of Nehru Maidan
On the occasion, Mr Rai also condemned those attempting to rename the Nehru Maidan in the city to central maidan.
By doing so, they are trying to taint the name of a freedom fighter, he said.
