Hubballi, Mar 26: Several parts of north Karnataka including the city of Hubballi witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied with gusty winds last evening. In the city, the rain started around 4.20pm and continued till 5pm, throwing life in the city out of gear.
The first summer shower brought wide smiles on the faces of citizens who were struggling due to the scorching temperatures. However, it caused damage to houses in some areas.
Tree branches collapsed in many places. A tree branch fell on the road near New English School. A tree branch fell in front of a house in Rajdhani Colony but luckily no one was injured. An eye witness said a truck was damaged after a branch fell on it. A house was damaged in Gangadhar Nagar while tin sheets of as many as 10 houses were blown in Old Hubballi.
A flood-like situation prevailed in low lying areas of the city. As drains were chocked, the main roads were inundated with rain water. As many areas were flooded with rainwater, traffic got jammed on some major roads. Those returning from offices and work were seen taking shelter at shops and other business establishments.
Water inundated New Cotton Market. Several autorickshaws were struck in the road as rainwater gushed into their silencers, said an eyewitness.
