Rajasthan: Ministerial level Yatras to seek votes in Modi's name

New Delhi/Jaipur, Jun 10: Clash of egos and infighting seemed to rule the roost in Rajasthan BJP delaying appointment of a regular state unit chief even as to strike 'balance', Amit Shah has mooted the idea of a 'Ministerial level Yatras' and preparing the roadmap to seek votes in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In clear indications that there are some negative vibes about Vasundhara Raje government, the saffron party may not seek votes in the name of 'performance' of Raje regime.

According to BJP sources, the appointment of new state unit president could have been through by now if the Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had given her green signal to party chief Amit Shah's choice of Jodhpur MP and Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

The Chief Minister was not quite pleased the manner Mr Shah had acted 'tough and aggressively' against the former state unit chief Ashok Parnami and relieved him from the responsibility after he was asked to step aside.

"Matters turned worse when Mr Shah wanted to impose his choice.....The Chief Minister sounded her displeasure," a party source told UNI.

Party's organisational Incharge of Rajasthan Avinash Rai Khanna and national joint secretary V Satish now have been asked to pursue party's campaign and other leaders including MPs, presidents of various boards and zilla parishads have been asked to make the the party "battle-ready" for the ensuing Assembly elections due later this year along with Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Sources said Mr Shah has spoken to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who as Mr Shah's predecessor as party president, could handle Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje (for 2014 battle) to try "see reason" so that Mr Gajendra Singh Shekhawat is appointed as regular Rajasthan unit president at the earliest.

"As a compromise formula at the instance of party incharge Khanna and national joint secretary (organisation) V Satish, the party chief Mr Shah has allowed former state president Mr Parnami to take interest in party's poll preparedness and suggest strategies. This seemed to work well as of now," the source said.

But things still need to be resolved as keeping up the pressure, Chief Minister Raje 'skipped' a crucial meeting of party leaders from Rajasthan in Delhi.

The BJP leaders and workers from the Jaipur Rural Lok Sabha constituency met in the national capital on Friday wherein BJP chief Shah focused his speech largely "on the achievements" of the Narendra Modi government and exhorted the party colleagues to ensure that Mr Modi's "Vijay (victory) Rath" do not face any hurdle in Rajasthan.

The avoiding of reference to Raje government in Rajasthan is seen as a deliberate ploy.

The ensuing assembly elections in Rajasthan will be of political significance in more ways than one for BJP as in 2019 parliamentary polls, the BJP would like to repeat the success tale of 2014 general elections.

Five years back, BJP had won all 25 seats in Rajasthan and this had contributed in a big way in giving Mr Modi the landslide and historic victory.

In the by-polls later, however, Congress nominees Raghu Sharma and Karan Singh Yadav has wrested Ajmer and Alwar Lok Sabha seats. The BJP also lost one assembly by-election in the western state.

Chief Minister Raje has been, however, cooperating well with two state incharges Avinash Rai Khanna and Gopal Shetty, and also party's national joint general secretary (organisation) V Satish.

She also attended a meeting of core members which was also attended by her loyalist and party's former Rajasthan unit chief Ashok Parnami. Khanna and Gopal Shetty and also party's national joint general secretary (organisation) V Satish also attended the same.

The fact that under pressure from Ms Raje, her confidant Mr Parnami was given importance is understood quite well as he was allowed to brief the media about the deliberations as well.

“In the meeting, party leaders decided that all should hard to ensure BJP's victory in the ensuing polls. Party leaders also took note of the negative propaganda by the Congress and decided that this should be countered well," he has said later.

Meanwhile, Mr Shah has asked party leaders focus on winnability factors in working out the poll strategies.

At Friday's meeting on Friday, he said: "We must win all the eight Assembly seats in Jaipur Rural. Tell me, will you ensure our victory in all the seats?"

As expected, the overwhelming response was 'yes'.

As the initial ground work, the party chief Mr Shah has given his nod for nine Yatras across the state and these will be undertaken by state ministers "in groups of three" to highlight achievements and welfare programmes of the state and central government.

"The campaign style ought to be different this time as we are in power in both the state as well as centre. Therefore, the chief minister would not be taking out a yatra as of now. But when the yatras reach the division/district headquarters, she will attend the major rallies," a source said.

It has also been decided that due to "anti incumbency" factor, votes will be sought chiefly in the name of Modi Sarkar.

"A party's internal survey team has already alerted the leadership that the voters have issues with the performance of Raje government. We are trying to address some of these issues," the source said.

Mangaluru, Nov 28: In a major breakthrough, police have arrested Rahul, alias Bol Karmaveer Eshwar Jat, a Haryana native, for a brutal train murder committed on October 25. Rahul, a notorious interstate serial offender, was apprehended after a relentless investigation involving multiple state police forces.

The October 25 incident occurred during a train journey when Rahul got into an argument over a cigarette with Mauzzam, a resident of Chikkaballapur. The altercation escalated, leading to Rahul strangling Mauzzam to death. He fled the scene with the victim’s mobile phone, bag, and cash.

Muazzan worked as a sales representative and was differently-abled. He boarded the train on October 24 from Yesvantpur and occupied the Divyang Coach. The incident came to light on the morning of October 25 at Udupi, where a railway guard found Muazzam unresponsive. The railway police immediately rushed him to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead.

Accused Rahul was tracked down through an exhaustive review of over 2,000 CCTV recordings by police teams from Valsad, Vapi, Surat, and Udvada. His identity was eventually confirmed by a vigilant officer from Surat Central Jail, leading to his capture in a joint operation by Railway and Surat police.

Rahul’s criminal record reveals a trail of horrifying offenses across Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Haryana, and West Bengal. Among these are the rape of a mentally ill minor girl in Pune and the rape and murder of a 19-year-old woman near Udvada railway station in Gujarat's Vapi district. Despite being arrested in the past, Rahul resumed his crimes after securing bail.

On November 19, he allegedly stabbed a 60-year-old man to death aboard the Katihar Express in West Bengal, with a case registered at the Howrah police station. In Telangana, he confessed to murdering a woman in yet another shocking crime.

Public Advisory:

  • Stay vigilant when traveling on trains, especially during late hours.
  • Report suspicious individuals or activities to railway authorities immediately.
  • Ensure your personal belongings are secure while traveling.
  • This arrest brings a sense of relief, but the investigations continue as authorities piece together the full extent of Rahul’s crimes.

Bengaluru: In a boost to the ruling Congress in Karnataka, the party on Saturday swept the by-polls to three Assembly segments, causing a major setback to the BJP-JD(S) alliance in the state.

The Congress has retained Sandur, the seat considered to be its strong hold, and has also bagged Shiggaon and Channapatna segments, which were earlier held by BJP and JD(S) respectively.

The November 13 by-polls to Sandur, Shiggaon and Channapatna Assembly segments had witnessed a fierce fight between the ruling Congress and a combative BJP-JD(S) alliance.

The by-polls to Sandur, Shiggaon and Channapatna were necessitated as the seats fell vacant following the election of their respective representatives -- E Tukaram of Congress, former CM Basavaraj Bommai of BJP, and Union Minister Kumaraswamy of JD(S) to Lok Sabha in May elections.

The by-polls witnessed a straight fight between the ruling Congress and BJP in Sandur and Shiggaon segments, while in Channapatna, JD(S) which is part of the NDA alliance took on the grand old party.

Congress' C P Yogeeshwara won the Channapatna segment, defeating JD(S) candidate and Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy, by a margin of 25,413 votes.

Former CM Basavaraj Bommai's son Bharath Bommai of BJP faced defeat against Congress' Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan in Shiggaon Assembly segment by a margin of 13,448 votes.

In Sandur, Congress candidate E Annapoorna, the wife of Bellary MP E Tukaram, won the seat vacated by her husband, by a margin of 9,649 votes.

Congress' win in the by-poll is seen as an endorsement of both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar's leadership, and the government's programmes, especially the five guarantee schemes.

Nikhil Kumaraswamy and Bharath Bommai, the third generation of Gowda and Bommai family respectively, who contested this bypolls, have lost. Their fathers and grandfathers had served as Karnataka's Chief Ministers in the past.

While for Bharath Bommai this was his electoral debut, for Nikhil it was his third electoral loss.

Among the three segments, Channapatna was considered to be a high profile battle, where the contest was between C P Yogeeshwara and actor-turned-politician Nikhil Kumaraswamy.

A five-time MLA from the segment and a former Minister, Yogeeshwara had joined the Congress after quitting BJP ahead of nomination.

There were plans to field Yogeeshwara on a JD(S) ticket, but he was not interested in it, and instead wanted Kumaraswamy to support him as BJP candidate. This was not acceptable to Kumaraswamy and his party, following which Yogeeshwara jumped ship.

However, Kumaraswamy had subsequently said he had agreed to Yogeeshwara contesting from BJP, and despite that he jumped ship to Congress, under the influence of Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and his brother and former MP D K Suresh.

Nikhil had faced defeat in 2019 Lok Sabha and 2023 Assembly polls. It is seen as a setback for Kumaraswamy too, as he could not ensure son's win from the Channapatna, the seat he had twice represented in the past.

Congress' win is crucial for Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress chief and his brother Suresh to strengthen their position in their home district of Ramanagara, a Vokkaliga heartland.

In Shiggaon, BJP's Bharath Bommai, son of Basavaraj Bommai lost against Congress' Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan, who had faced defeat against the former Chief Minister in the 2023 Assembly polls.

Initially, former MLA Syed Azeempeer Khadri, a Congress' ticket aspirant, had raised a banner of revolt in Shiggaon, by filing his nomination as an independent, but later withdrew after intervention by party leadership.

In Sandur, Bellary MP Tukaram's wife E Annapurna of Congress won from the seat vacated by her husband, against BJP ST Morcha president Bangaru Hanumanthu, who is considered close to party leader and former mining barron G Janardhan Reddy.

Sandur is a Congress' bastion, and Tukaram had represented it four times.

Congress winning the by-polls is seen as "crucial" for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to assert himself , amid demands for his resignation following charges against him in the MUDA site allotment case.

There were also behind-the-scenes political activities within the ruling Congress earlier this year, with a few ministers in his Cabinet holding closed door meetings, fueling speculation about leadership change. But such activities came to a halt following instructions from the party high command.

It is equally important for Shivakumar, who has not shied away from openly expressing his Chief Ministerial ambitions, amid speculations over "rotational Chief Minister formula," according to which he will become CM after two-and-half years (in this govt's five years tenure), but they have not been officially confirmed by the party.

The defeat in this by-poll is seen as a setback for state BJP President Vijayendra, who has been facing intense criticism and opposition from a section within the party, who have raised a banner of revolt against his leadership accusing him and his father, veteran leader B S Yediyurappa of "adjustment politics".
