Reckless tanker kills police head constable at Melkar

Mangaluru, Jan 4: A 48-year-old head police constable on duty died on the spot after being run over by a tanker on Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway at Melkar in Bantwal taluk on Wednesday.

The victim is Rukmaiah, attached to Puttur town police station. He was a resident of Kalladka area.

The accident occurred when he was waiting for a bus to return to Puttur at Melkar after serving a notice. Though he was rushed to hospital, he breathed his last soon after.

He is survived by his wife and two children. Bantwal traffic police have registered a case and launched an investigation.

In his condolence message, Dakshina Kannada SP Bhushan Gulabrao Borase said, "Rukmayya was a very sincere and hard-working policeman.”
