Rio Paralympics: Thangavelu wins gold, Varun Bhati bronze in men's high jump

New Delhi, Sep 10: Mariyappan Thangavelu clinched gold medal and Varun Singh Bhati won bronze in men's high jump to open India’s medal tally at Rio Paralympics on Friday.

Mariyappan Thangavelu won gold with a jump of 1.89 metre and Bhati won bronze with an attempt of 1.86m, which is also his personal best mark. Sam Grewe of United States won silver.

Thangavelu is the first Indian high-jumper to win gold at the Paralympics. He is also the third Indian to win a gold at Paralympics after Murlikant Petkar and Devendra Jhajharia.
