Say'NO' to AIDS

December 1, 2013

Mangalore: Most of us fortunately recognize and understand the significance of the red ribbon. It is a global symbol for solidarity with HIV positive people and those living with AIDS. Though red ribbon is also a symbol for drunk-driving prevention and drug prevention, this discussion will be all about AIDS, its causes, prevention and the myths surrounding it.

aids

Every year, December 1 is observed as World AIDS Day - dedicated to raising awareness about AIDS, caused by the spread of HIV infection.

What is AIDS and HIV?

HIV is the infection that causes AIDS. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive.

If a person tests positive for HIV, it does not necessarily mean that the person has AIDS.  A diagnosis of AIDS is made by a physician according to the CDC AIDS Case Definition. A person infected with HIV may receive an AIDS diagnosis after developing one of the CDC-defined AIDS indicator illnesses. A person with HIV can also receive an AIDS diagnosis on the basis of certain blood tests (CD4 counts) and may not have experienced any serious illnesses.

Common causes of AIDS

HIV can be transmitted through blood, sexual fluids, or breast milk of an HIV-infected person. HIV is transmitted primarily via unprotected sexual intercourse (including anal and even oral sex), contaminated blood transfusions, hypodermic needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding.

Let's not get infected

Say NO to

·       Unprotected sexual intercourse

·       Re-use of needles or syringes

·       Intravenous drugs that are not prescribed by your physician. This can increase your risk of infection with HIV and make you more likely to participate in risky sexual behavior.

·       Getting tested if you become pregnant

Curiosity kills the cat; so does ignorance. Most of the time we like to live in self-denial mode but a little open-mindedness can save us.

·       Seek treatment if you think you have been exposed to other STDs, such as gonorrhea, syphilis, or chlamydia. Infection with these diseases can increase your risk of contracting HIV.

·       Ask a health professional about other HIV prevention strategies

·       A blood test can determine you are infected with HIV. Too many people don't know they have HIV.

Myths and misconceptions

·       One can be infected by being around people who are HIV positive

·       One can get HIV by mosquitoes

·       New drugs are available to heal a person from HIV viruses, one need not worry about being   infected

·       My life will end the day I'm HIV infected

·       If one doesn't use IV drugs and is honest in his relationship he will not be HIV infected

·       One can make out if their partner is HIV positive by being around them

Is Mangalore AIDS/HIV aware?

Fortunately, yes.  World AIDS Day and also AIDS week is celebrated by organizing campus rallies, speeches, street plays by many institutions and organizations all over Mangalore. Though all are worthy of a mention here, I have chosen few

St. Agnes College: St. Agnes College has an AIDS Awareness Education Cell. It was started in the year 1999, and as implied by the name, works to create among youth, awareness regarding the prevention of AIDS and care of AIDS victims. Yearly activities include: Orientation for New Members, Training of Educators, Educative Sessions, relevant competitions, conducting AIDS Awareness Week and also visits to rehabilitation centers and hospitals.

Sadhan Sanchari clinic:

Since knowledge is the key to prevention of many diseases the'SADHAN SANCHARI CLINIC' aims at providing that facility to the common man. It has introduced a mobile van which travels all over the district and camps at strategic locations like construction sites, slums, beaches, at fairs or festive gatherings. The inside of the van is divided into 3 sections; the counseling, testing and treatment sections.

The Sadhan clinic has its base in Kotara Chowki and can be identified by a yellow van. There are male and female counselors. They also have an Inter-personal communicator who breaks the news of the existence of HIV to patients if tested positive.

KMC Hospital Attavar:

KMC Hospital Attavar is the first to have an Infectious Disease Unit, which treats all infections including HIV. It has treated nearly 2000 HIV patients and has been responsible for the long time survival of nearly 750 patients who have been leading healthy lives even after 10 years of diagnosis.

Not just this, Mangalore, known for its educational institutions has schools and colleges enlightening their students through seminars, awareness programmes and talks about HIV and AIDS.

What will you do to mark World AIDS Day?

Mangaluru, Jan 2: The coastal city of Mangaluru witnessed yet another alarming car fire incident last evening, marking the latest in a series of similar mishaps in recent months. Fortunately, quick action by the driver and passengers prevented any injuries.

On January 1, a moving Volkswagen car caught fire on the road leading to the helipad at Maryhill. The passengers noticed flames emanating from the front of the vehicle. Acting promptly, the driver pulled over, and all four occupants exited safely.

Local residents attempted to douse the flames using water, and personnel from the Kadri fire service soon arrived to manage the situation. Despite their efforts, the car's engine was completely destroyed.

This incident adds to a growing list of car fire cases reported in Mangaluru recently:

December 16, 2024: A Hyundai car caught fire near City Centre Mall. The driver narrowly escaped.

November 15, 2024: A car was gutted within minutes near Kadri police station, though the driver escaped unharmed.

November 10, 2024: A Maruti 800 waiting at a petrol station caught fire and was completely burnt.

September 28, 2024: A parked BMW at Adyar was destroyed in a fire.

September 5, 2024: Another BMW caught fire near NITK.

In all these incidents, timely evacuation ensured that no injuries were reported. However, the frequency of such cases raises serious concerns about vehicle safety and the need for preventive measures.

Authorities and vehicle manufacturers must investigate the underlying causes of these fires to prevent future occurrences. Public awareness about vehicle maintenance and safety measures is also critical to avert such mishaps.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: Most wanted Maoists operating in deep jungles of Western Ghats, hilly and coastal region of Karnataka have decided to lay down their arms and join the mainstream following the appeal by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka Congress government.

According to sources, the Maoists have taken the decision following the encounter of Vikram Gowda and the continuous combing operations in the Western Ghat region by the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) and the Karnataka Police.

Sources said that top leaders Mundagaru Latha who leads the Tunga Naxal Wing in the state; Sundari, Vanajakshi, Jeesha, the most wanted Maoists of south India; K. Vasantha from Andhra Pradesh and Mareppa Aroli have decided to surrender and lay down their arms.

Maoist leader Sundari’s brother Anand, who was also a Naxal and returned to the mainstream, stated, “They will welcome her home if she decides to lay down arms. Let her and associates stop the struggle and live like common people. It’s 17 years since she had gone away from home. We will be happy if she comes back to us.”

“Sundari, surrender before the government and come back home,” he appealed in Kutlur of Mangaluru district.

The surrender procedure will happen in two to three days, sources confirmed.

The sources also revealed that the Maoists had written a letter in this regard to the Citizen’s Forum, a progressive organisation and the members of the forum have discussed the matter already with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

CM Siddaramaiah welcomed the proposal and gave the green signal for authorities to start the surrender procedures.

The Maoists have demanded that the surrender process should take place in a dignified manner and that their self-respect should not be harmed. They have also demanded that they should not be prevented from exercising their rights under a democratic system.

The Maoists have also demanded that they should not be made to languish in prisons. The 'false' cases against them should be closed and cooperation has to be extended for them after surrender to obtain bail. It has also been demanded that all cases must be brought under one court and trial has to be expedited.

They have also demanded financial support from the government to shape their lives. The package has to be applied to other surrendered Maoists who are presently in prison. They have also sought clarification on whether Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala states will take one stand on the matter.

The Maoists have also demanded a judicial investigation of the Vikram Gowda encounter.

Mangaluru: Air India Express (AIE) has postponed its much-anticipated direct flight service between Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) and Singapore, citing low bookings. Passengers who had booked tickets for the inaugural flight scheduled for January 21 and subsequent dates have been notified of the cancellation through email.

In its email, AIE assured passengers of alternative travel arrangements, including connecting flight options between MIA and Singapore. However, the decision to delay the direct service has left travelers and travel agents disappointed.

An AIE official attributed the postponement to operational challenges but clarified that the airline has not abandoned plans for the route. “We are committed to starting the service, but there is no immediate confirmation on the new launch date,” the official stated. He further explained that sustaining a route requires consistent demand, and seasonal travel alone is insufficient to justify operations.

Another AIE representative admitted that the number of bookings for the inaugural flight was below expectations but declined to disclose specific figures.

Rajesh H Acharya, director of HQ Connections Pte Ltd in Singapore and coordinator of the Singapore Tuluver community, expressed his disappointment. Acharya, who has been advocating for a direct flight between Mangaluru and Singapore since 2017, said, “After years of effort, we finally convinced the airline to start this service, but it has now been deferred.”

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Acharya posted: "Did not expect such behavior from @AirIndiaX, now owned by @TataCompanies & @SIAirlines. If there are issues, travelers deserve to be informed well in advance. This decision needs investigation at the highest level."

The delay has raised questions among the travel community, with many hoping the airline will address these concerns and provide a clear timeline for the launch of the Mangaluru-Singapore direct flight.
