Without meeting any resistance from authorities, the illegal sale of liquor in the premises of Sri Dharmasthala Aided Higher Primary School in Puduvettu has resulted in the school verandah transforming into a happening hang-out for the alcoholics.
This has angered educationalists and the locals who allege that the episode has taken place in the village due to corrupt Excise Department officials.
In Miyara and Bolmanar regions of Puduvettu, illegal sale of liquor has been going on from the past few years without any check. Although several complaints have been lodged with the Grama Panchayat, excise department and other authorities in this regard, inaction from officials concerned has kept the illegal trade alive.
There are also allegations that the School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) was turning a blind eye on the sale of liquor.
The damage caused to the school goes unseen even by the respective managements who run the church, madrasa and bhajan house near the school. These drunkards also create nuisance in the surrounding by dumping alcohol bottles in the premises and also picking up fights after getting drunk.
Unfortunately, while the men make merry, the school students are made to clean the school premises in the morning.
The villagers urge the authorities to take action to curb the shameful act and bail the children out.
