The police said the boy, Aviral from the Railway Colony, was walking behind the van that was being reversed when its rear tyre crushed him, killing him on the spot.

Residents of the area pulled out the driver, 20-year-old Rahul Kumar, and restrained him till the police arrived and took him into custody. He has been booked for causing death by negligence.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma said the van operated in a private capacity and did not belong to John Lesley, a preparatory school where the boy was enrolled.

Aviral and other boys from his locality were regularly picked and dropped home by the van. His parents picked him up from the drop-off point,

On Tuesday, as soon he got off the van, the child looked around for his parents and ran behind the van.

“The driver has claimed that there was a blind spot behind his van because of which he could not see the running boy at the time he was taking a reverse,” said a senior police officer.

His parents who witnessed the accident rushed him to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.

“We have booked the accused based on the statement of his parents,” said an officer.
