Mangaluru, Jun 18: Accusing Dakshina Kannada district police of being communally biased against Muslims, Social Democratic Party of India has said that several innocent Muslims have been targeted by the cops in the wake of recent communal disturbances in Kalladka town of Bantwal taluk.

Addressing a press conference at BC Road, near here, Ashraf Manchi, district secretary of SDPI, said the cases booked against the accused belonging to Muslim and Hindu communities in the aftermath of June 13 clash exposed the communal mindset of the police.

“Police have registered 10 cases in connection with Kalladka clash. However, they have registered complaints against 82 persons from Muslim community and only against 19 persons from Hindu community,” he said.

He said that though police have arrested nine persons each from Hindu and Muslim communities, Muslims have been slapped with cases under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder), while most of the arrested Hindus have been slapped minor cases under weaker Sections like 324. “32 Muslims have been booked under Section 304, while only 4 members of the Sangh Parivar, which is mainly responsible for the incident have been booked under the same Section,” he lamented.

He said that activists of the Sangh Parivar had pelted stones on the Masjid and Madrasa from atop a building owned by Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat. “The president of the Masjid, Abubakar Haji, has informed the police regarding the damage caused. However, they have not registered case against any of the accused in the incident. Ironically, complaint has been registered against 30 Muslims on charge of pelting stones at a Sri Rama temple,” he said.

Mr Manchi also accused the police of committing atrocities against Muslims. “Bantwal Circle Inspector B K Manjayya and Bantwal town police station SI Rakshit A K, along with a team with no women police entered the houses of innocent Muslims late at night and committed atrocities against family members irrespective of women, elderly people and sick. The police also damaged the doors and windows of the Muslim houses during midnight raids. The shocked women have been admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru, but the police are not ready to take the statements of the victims,” he complained.

“In fact stones were pelted at SI A K Rakshit when he was trying to disperse the violent crowd near the Sri Rama Vidyakendra after dispersing crowd in front of the mosque. In this case police have named 23 accused. Ironically all of them are Muslims and they were also booked under Section 307,” said Munish Ali, a local SDPI leader and member of Bantwal Town Municipal Council.

Calling Kalladka clash as a pre-planned conspiracy of Sangh Parivar, he said that the government had completely failed in thwarting the plot of the communal outfits. “Their intention was to create a major communal riot. Had the district administration and police department taken enough precautionary measures after two innocent Muslim youths were stabbed on May 26 by Sangh Parivar activists, this wouldn’t have happed,” he said accusing both Congress and BJP of resorting to vote bank politics.

Police targeting innocent Hindus, says MP

Meanwhile Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has accused the police of arresting innocent Hindus due to political pressure. “Both police department and communal mafia trying to suppress Hindu power and Hindu sentiments,” he told media persons in Puttur.

He said that the police department has become a mere puppet in the hands of the politicians in Congress ruled Karnataka. “The hands of able and efficient police officers have been tied. Even though miscreants of other communities are harassing Hindus, police are arresting innocent Hindus for the sake of head count,” he lamented.

He went on to claim that the police invoked the Goonda Act against innocent Hindu youths in order to create fear among Hindu society, while the real culprits are roaming free.

He said that BJP will extend full support to the protest scheduled to be organized by Hindu Jaagarana Vedike on June 24 at Kalladka. He said that BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa will also take part in the protest.

devarajegowda.jpg

A day after National Commission for Women said no woman from Hassan approached the national body to file complaints against Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna, a new FIR accusing BJP leader Devaraje Gowda of abusing and assaulting a woman has come to light.

The FIR against Gowda was filed by a woman at the Holenarasipura town police station on April 1, after her husband had filed a complaint against the BJP leader on March 30.

The purported victim's husband has alleged in his plaint that Gowda barged into their home, and threatened the couple while the BJP leader also abused the woman.

Gowda, notably, flagged Prajwal Revanna's case to the saffron party.

Reacting to the allegations levelled against him, the BJP politico posted a video on Facebook where he details how he met the woman and her husband in his office. He also claims that the allegations against him are a plot and false.

It must be noted here that a Special Investigation Team is currently probing the sexual assault cases against Prajwal Revanna who along with his driver Karthik is no longer in the country. A Blue Corner notice is also in place to apprehend the son of H D Revanna who himself is placed under judicial custody till May 14.

In a major twist to the entire case— the woman in the FIR alleged that Devaraje Gowda who apprised BJP of the sex videos involving Prajwal Revanna— has been harassing her for the past 10 months under the guise of helping her sell a property.

The woman also said that she came in contact with Gowda during the process involving the property that she wanted to sell. However, on the pretext of guiding her, the woman alleged that the whistleblower BJP leader physically assaulted and harassed her while Gowda also threatened the couple.

The woman has now sought police protection for herself and family. Further levelling allegations against Gowda in her plaint, she said that the politico had taken her to an isolated place where he assaulted her and threatened to kill the couple.

Former chief minister of Karnataka and Prajwal Revanna's uncle H D Kumaraswamy recently demanded a CBI probe in the Prajwal Revanna matter. However, Home Minister G Parameshwara turned down the demand for the investigation to be handed over to CBI.

Several women, believed to be victims of Prajwal Revanna, have left their homes in Karnataka's Hassan district over the last ten days, according to media reports.

These departures reportedly come amid fear and stigma after their identities became public due to the circulating video clips showing the women who were allegedly sexually assaulted by Prajwal Revanna.

"The entire district is in H D Revanna’s control. You speak ill about them and chances are high that it will reach them, because the family and the party have a large following," a shopkeeper in Hagare - 20 km from Hassan – was quoted as saying by the news paper.

Hassan is the bastion of the JD(S) supremo Deve Gowda, and Prajwal, his grandson, is the sitting MP.

The family of the woman whose complaint was the basis of the first FIR against Prajwal has now left their home, the publication reported, citing a neighbour who said, "The woman worked at Revanna’s house as a house help. Some of her videos started to circulate and then, her house was seen locked. We don’t know when she left."

Notably, a former Zilla Panchayat member has also filed a rape case against Prajwal, and in that village many women who worked for the party formerly are now incommunicado, a JD(S) leader told the publication. "We noticed many of the party women deleting their photos with Prajwal on social media. In some instances, men are questioning their wives about their association with the MP. It is shattering the lives of many women in the district," he said.

The local leader added that the former Zilla Panchayat member was there on April 24, but no one had seen the family since the videos came out.

The case is currently being probed by an SIT team and when they reached the Revanna residence, party workers were reportedly heard talking about the women. "I know this woman, she lived close to our residence and was very active in JD(S) activities. Her house is locked… she has small children," one said, as per IE.

Another shopkeeper added, "It was really wrong to reveal the faces of the women. I know some of them, and they have gone into hiding. We don’t know whether they can return."

He noted that it is impossible to survive in Hassan while fighting a case against the Revanna family.

While Prajwal's father, H D Revanna is in SIT custody, a Blue Corner notice has been issued against the sitting MP.

Hubballi, May 17: Karnataka Police have arrested the killer, Vishwa, also known as Girish, in the sensational Anjali Ambigera murder case, police said on Friday.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Vishwa was a habitual thief who exploited innocent young women. The accused is also a drunkard and was caught while attempting to commit theft. He was also part of a gang which stole bikes.

The accused targeted gullible young women, enacting a drama of love and playing the emotional card to forcefully extort gold, silver, and cash from them. When Anjali did not agree to any of his attempts to rob her and outrightly rejected his offer to go with him to Mysuru city, he brutally killed her.

The police had formed two teams to hunt down the killer. One of the teams was searching in the south Karnataka region, and another team, which launched a hunt in Davanagere, nabbed him. The accused was arrested by the police on Thursday.

The police could not catch him sooner as the killer did not carry a mobile phone and did not use his phone for 15 days, before murdering Anjali. The jurisdictional Bendigeri Police were aware of the killer's history, but even after the complaint by the girl’s family, they showed "utter negligence".

The 24-year-old Vishwa entered Anjali Ambigera's (20) residence at 5.30 A.M. on Wednesday and stabbed the young woman multiple times before she could react. Vishwa dragged Anjali Ambigera all over the house, kicking and stabbing her. Later, he pushed her into the kitchen where he stabbed her repeatedly.

Despite efforts by Anjali’s grandmother and two sisters to stop the attacker, he killed her and managed to flee. The incident occurred in the Veerapura Oni area within the jurisdiction of the Bendigeri Police Station.

Vishwa had been blackmailing Anjali and pressurising her to accompany him to Mysuru without informing her parents. The incident which took place close on the heels of MCA student Neha Hiremath’s brutal murder by the jilted lover has raised concern over the safety of women all across the state.

The BJP had demanded the resignation of Home Minister G. Parameshwara while the Congress leaders have also demanded that the Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner Renuka Sukumar should be transferred for failing to sensitise the police force regarding issues of women’s safety.
