Payyannur, Feb 2: Tens of thousands of mourners thronged Ettikulam Masjid ground near Payyannur in Kerala on Sunday morning to attend the funeral prayer of Ullal Khazi Tajul Ulema Sayyed Abdul Rahman Al Bukhari, who breathed his last on Saturday.
Tajul Ulema's son Assayyid Fazal Hamid Koyamma Thangal Koorath, who is also the in-charge Khazi of Ullal, led the funeral prayers.
Thangal was buried next to his mother's grave near the Masjid in the presence of a galaxy religious scholars and family members.
Fans, followers and disciples from all over India and foreign countries also took part in the funeral.
The unprecedented crowd led to traffic jams in Payannur for several hours. In various parts of Kerala few shops and businesses owned by Sunni Muslims were closed Sunday in homage to their leader.
Earlier Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader and others had requested the family members of departed spiritual leader to shift the mortal remains to Ullal for public viewing. However several religious leaders decided not to delay the burial. More details awaited.
