Mangalore, Dec 30: Work will be undertaken on the Shiradi Ghat stretch on the Bangalore-Mangalore National Highway in two phases to convert it into a permanent and long-lasting motorable road, for which the central government has released a sum of Rs 95.60 crore, said Union Minister for Transport, Road and Highways Oscar Fernandes.
Speaking at a press conference in the city on Monday, he said that restoration and concretisation of the existing stretch would be undertaken parallelly in this regard. Repairs and restoration work on the stretch has commenced and will be completed by January 31, for the ease of traffic.
In the second phase, permanent work such as concretisation and asphalting of the road will be undertaken and completed within the next 18 months. Work in the second phase will begin from February 20, he said, urging the district-in-charge minister to supply the necessary quarry material so that work would be completed sooner.
He said that daily progress of the repair work on the stretch would be updated online on a website created for monitoring the project work.
District-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai and PWD Minister H C Mahadevappa were present.
