Udupi, Apr 30: Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje has slammed the Karnataka police for arresting pro-BJP journalist S A Hemanth Kumar for spreading a provocative fake news.
Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday, after meeting Hemanth Kumar, who is in the police custody, at the CID headquarters, she alleged that the Police are acting at the behest of the Minister for Home M B Patil, and had slapped a false case against him.
Shobha Karandlaje has also written a letter to the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. She requested Mr Singh to instruct the Karnataka DG and IGP to stop vindictive steps against BJP workers.
State police chief Neelamani N. Raju had failed to come up with a convincing reply on the arrest of Hemanth Kumar when a BJP delegation met her on Saturday, said Ms Karandlaje adding that this clearly shows the police is acting at the behest of Mr Patil.
She also referred to the fact that the case has been transferred to the CID, where the CID DIG, Hemanth Nimbalkar is likely to investigate the case. His wife Anjali Nimbalkar is a Congress MLA and there is every chance of Mr Nimbalkar acting vindictively to please Congress leaders in this case, Ms Karandlaje argued.
Hemanth Kumar was arrested by the CID of Karnataka police last Saturday for allegedly sharing a fake letter that falsely attributed to Karnataka home minister and Congress leader M B Patil to defame him and his party during Lok Sabha polls.
The letter that has since been ruled as fake, was addressed to senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, which stated that the Congress had hatched a plan to unite the minority communities under faith and divide the Hindus based on caste and sect to help the party win the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. The letter referred to capitalising on the “prevailing differences between the Veerashaiva-Lingayat" community to break up Hindu voters.
