Bengaluru, Jul 29: Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Siddaramaiah may by default become the leader of opposition on Monday when chief minister BS Yediyurappamoves the vote of confidenceto prove BJP’s majority in the legislative assembly.
“The party high command has asked Siddaramaiah to be opposition leader. But his continuation in the post will all depend on party legislators,” a senior Congress leader said, stressing on the significance of a CLP meeting on Monday.
“The CLP chief would by default become the opposition leader,” a party source said. “But with senior leader DK Shivakumar entering the fray, the party has seriously considered seeking the opinion of its MLAs before taking a final call.”
In the legislative council, former minister Jayamala or senior MLC SR Patil may be asked to temporarily play the role of opposition leader.
If Monday’s CLP meeting does not go smoothly, sources said the party may depute observers to interact with party MLAs and take a call. “Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar meet the criterion of being popular with the masses so we will deal with this issue democratically,” an MLA quoted a top Congress leader in Delhi as saying.
The CLP leader will become the Leader of Opposition by default because the Congress, with 67 MLAs, is the largest opposition party in the assembly. The JD(S) now has 34 MLAs.
