The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will likely feature nine or 10 teams. Adani Group and Sanjiv Goenka Group are reportedly interested in buying an IPL team for the next year.

In less than 12 hours after the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, the reports of The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) adding a 9th team in IPL made headlines in the country. While a report had suggested that the board was planning to add an IPL team to recover for the losses incurred, there have been multiple occasions when such reports have made headlines.

The IPL franchises have been asked to wait for a month and the apex board will soon deliver an official word regarding it. Presently, there are eight teams in IPL.

Even though the board hasn't officially said anything about the new IPL team, a report in Mumbai Mirror suggests that Adani Group and Sanjiv Goenka Group are interested parties and might bid for the ninth team. A few others are also in the fray.

Should Sanjiv Goenka Group buy an IPL team, they will mark a comeback in IPL. They had bought Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in IPL 2016 and 2017. RPS had failed to qualify for the playoffs in the first season but they made a strong comeback next year and played the final. Mumbai Indians had won IPL 2017 in a final-ball thriller. Former India captain MS Dhoni had led RPS in the first season. He was replaced by Steve Smith for IPL 2017.

The board's decision regarding the new team will also have a major impact on the IPL 2021 auction. It might organise a mega-auction if new team/teams are added for IPL 2021.
