China Open: P V Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth reach quarters

Fuzhou, Nov 8: Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the quarter-finals of the China Open World Tour Super 750 here on Thursday.

Olympic and World Championship silver medallist Sindhu , Sindhu defeated Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-12 21-15 in the second round, while Srikanth defeated Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto in a three-game match.

Earlier, Srikanth had skipped the event due to a muscle strain last season, managed to register a 10-21 21-9 21-9 win over Tommy Sugiarto in a 45-minute men's singles match.

The World No 9 has lost to Chen twice in the last three years. The only time Srikanth had an upper hand was at the 2014 Hong Kong Open.

In the women's singles contest, Sindhu, without giving any chance to her opponent Busanan to put pressure on her, she led right from the start and reached 11-4 at the break.

In the second game also, Sindhu had a 4-0 early advantage but with seven straight points Busanan took a 7-4 lead. However, Sindhu, managed to wrest an 11-8 lead. 

In the men's singles, Srikanth seemed to struggle by his opponent Tommy in the opening game and couldn't stop Tommy to take a 11-6 lead at the break.

Later, Srikanth changed his tactics in the second game and took a 11-6 lead. 

With losing three more points, the Indian grabbed the remaining 10 points to roar back into contest.

In the deciding game, Srikanth jumped from 7-3 to 13-3 and won the game.

Now, the third-seeded Sindhu will face eighth-seeded He Bingjiao while Srikanth will face Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien Chen.
