Bangalore, Jan 28: Health Minister U T Khader said the government was considering establishing a physiotherapy council in the State to strengthen research and education in physiotherapy.
Speaking at the inauguration of the two-day national physiotherapy conference 'Physio Accord 2014', organised by the Karnataka Physiotherapists recently, Mr Khader said there was a need for a separate physiotherapy council on the lines of the nursing and medical council. “Karnataka hones several thousands of physiotherapists in the State every year. A separate council will help address their demands and concerns,” he said. He said such a council would help in addressing quackery in the State.
The Minister also said the government has changed the recruitment criteria for physiotherapists in government institutes. “Earlier, we recruited students who completed their diploma in physiotherapy (DPT). Very soon, the department will ensure that only students who have completed their Bachelor of Physiotherapy and Master of Physiotherapy will be recruited.”
Asked what would happen to the prospects of students pursuing their diplomas, he said there were no takers for diploma in physiotherapy course and most colleges had scrapped the DPT course. Sriprakash K.S., Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, said there was a need for an apex body to standardise and regularise physiotherapy institutes.
