Mangalore, April 12: Utter chaos in traffic reigned on Thursday morning due to a truck break down on Netravati Bridge on National Highway-66 near Thokkottu on the city's fringes.
Hundreds of vehicles and thousands of commuters were stranded for more than three hours alongside the long bridge from 8:30 am.
The truck carrying heavy goods came to a stop in the middle of the bridge when its rear tyres got punctured.
With tremendous increase in the traffic between Mangalore and Thokkottu, it took several hours to clear traffic gridlock.
Vehicles moved one by one on a single lane at one end of the bridge.
“To reach Konaje from Mangalore, a bus usually takes a maximum of 50 minutes. However, today it took nearly two and half hours to reach the destination” said a bus conductor.
“Many two- and four-wheelers violate traffic rules by moving in a haphazard manner breaking the lane discipline, which further aggravated the gridlock. Students and office-goers usually do not wait for the gridlock to clear”, said a traffic police.
