Mangalore, Jan 4: Local street vendors under the banner of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a protest in front of the Central Market here on Friday, demanding an alternative arrangement for street vendors to peddle their goods.
Addressing the protestors, honorary president of the district unit of CITU Sunil Kumar Bajal said that the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Bill had been passed in the Parliament in 2012, to protect the livelihood of street vendors. However, today they are helpless as they are being opposed by permanent shop owners in Central Market and other markets in the city. The concerned authorities have to provide separate space for the street vendors, and earn their livelihood, he said.
CITU member B K Imthiyaz said that forcefully evicting the street vendors from the streets was a breach of the Supreme Court order, and it was the responsibility of the Mangalore City Corporation to provide alternative arrangement to the street vendors.
Several vendors took part in the protest, urged the MCC and district administration to arrange an alternative to peddle their ware in the city.
A memorandum was handed over to the Deputy Commissioner in this regard.
