Mangaluru, Jul 1: As many as seven persons allegedly linked to a communal outfit were apprehended by police in connection with an unprovoked assault on a group of Muslim youth at Munchoor near Surathkal on Tuesday evening.
The arrested have been identified as Guru, Prabhakar, Santosh alias Santu, Naveena, Deva, Dinesha and Jagan. All of them are local residents, sources said.
The arrests were made within a few hours after a complaint was lodged at Surthkal police station by a group of youths who were brutally assaulted by a gang of around 20 people.
It is learnt that the victims had identified Guru, who was arrested first and based on the information given by him others were arrested. The cops are in search of other accused in connection with the case.
On Tuesday a group of six men from Krishnapur – Anwar, Taufeeq, Safwan, Parween, Rakhan, Sahil – were gheraoed and attacked by the miscreants when they were returning home.
Among them three persons, who suffered severe injuries, were admitted to a private a hospital in the city while three others were given treatment at Government Wenlock Hospital and sent home.
Mangaluru City Police Commission S Murugan said that security has been beefed up in Surathkal and surrounding areas to prevent the recurrence of untoward incidents. Stringent action will be taken against trouble mongers, he said. He also warned of strict action against those spreading rumours.
