Gadag, Oct 20: Siddalinga Swamiji of Tontadarya Mutt, Gadag, in North Karnataka, passed away following severe cardiac attack on Saturday. He was 69.
According to Mutt sources, Swamiji complained about severe chest pain and he was immediately rushed to a private hospital where he breathed lost.
The police have increased the security outside the historical mutt in Gadag where devotees have started gathering. Police have barricaded the mutt surroundings and major traffic snarls are expected in and around Gadag.
The Swajiji had led a delegation to the then Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to demand separate religion status and reservation for 'Lingayat' community.
The seer has fan following not only in Gadag but also across the state. Soon after the news of see’s death spread, personalities including former PM H D Deve Gowda, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and former CM Siddaramaiah condoled.
“It’s a great loss to the society and religious world. We need seers like him to lead the society and people. We feel orphaned,” Shivu Hiremath, a farmer and mutt devotee said. The mortal remains of Siddalinga seer will be brought to mutt premises after which final rights are expected to take place.
Politicians, seers of various mutts and devotees from other parts of Karnataka are expected to arrive for the last rites.
