Chikkaballapura, Jun 22: Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily today alleged that the decision to have pre-poll alliance with the Janata Dal Secular led to debacle of Congress in the recently held Lok Sabha election in Karnataka.

Speaking to newsmen here on Saturday, he said that “had the Congress fought the Lok Sabha elections without alliance with the JD(S), the party would have won at least 15 to 16 seats in the State”.

“It was a mistake trusting the alliance,” he said.

“The JDS-Congress coalition government had not responded to the needs of the people of the State”, Moily, who contested as alliance candidate from Chikkaballapura Lok Sabha seat, lost to BJP candidate and former Karnataka Minister B N Bachhe Gowda.

This is the second time Moily has publicly lamented the party’s decision to fight the Lok Sabha election with the JD(S). A week after the Lok Sabha election results were announced, Moily had blamed the JD(S) for his defeat, saying the regional party did not support him and depending on their votes was a mistake.

Moily also said that he would continue to work with the people of Chikkaballapur. “I don't know if I'll contest again. I don’t have such an aspiration anyway,” he said.
