Mysuru, Oct 8: In a shocking incident, a 45-year-old tusker identified as Ranga aka ‘Rowdy Ranga’ was killed in a road accident near Mattigodu, in Nagarahole Forest, near Hunsuru in the wee hours of Monday.
It is learnt that a private bus from Kannur heading towards Bengaluru knocked down the jumbo while it was attempting to cross the road
Ranga was severely injured on his hip and suffered a major cut and fracture in the back. Elephant camp veterinarian Dr Mujeeb and staffers treated the elephant along with the help of other mahouts and captive elephants. But Ranga succumbed to injuries later.
The jumbo was rescued three years ago from Bannerghatta limits in Bengaluru and later shifted to the elephant camp.
“It is usual practice at the camp to let elephants out into the forest in the night and get them back to the camp as the day breaks. Ranga was also let into the park on Sunday night and in the early hours a bus has hit the elephant near the camp,” a senior forest official explained.
The incident has occurred at a time when the closure of night traffic through the Bandipur National Parkis taking twists and turns with every passing day with Kerala using all its clout at the Centre. At present, the only alternative road is via the Nagarahole National Park, where the mishap occurred.
