Mangalore, Apr 4: Six persons lost their lives in as many as five road accidents that occurred in and around Mangalore on Thursday.
In one mishap, two young brothers were killed on the spot when a service bus rammed into their motorbike at Yekkur in Mangalore on Thursday morning. The deceased are Muhammad Naushad (25) and Umar Rashid (22), residents of Thokkottu.
The incident took place at about 9:30 a.m. when a local bus by name 'Sharada' plying from B C Road to Kankanady route knocked down their motorbike, which was also moving in the same direction.
The bodies have been taken to District Wenlock Hospital. Rashid was working in a medical store, while his brother Naushad was a coolie.
Kankanady rural police are investigating the case.
Three of family killed
In another gut-wrenching tragedy, three people belonging to the same family, including a pregnant woman, died as a KSRTC bus collided with an auto rickshaw on the National Highway near Kumble Railway station in Kasaragod on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Babitha (24), her husband Rama (35) and her mother Janaki, residents of Paivalike near Uppala. The auto rickshaw driver Haris (27) from Lalbagh in Mangalore, who was severely injured in the mishap, was admitted to a private hospital in Mangalore.
The tragedy occurred when Babitha was being taken in an auto rickshaw to the General Hospital in Kasaragod, due to labour pain. The KSRTC bus which was plying towards Mangalore rammed against the rickshaw.
Though all the four victims were immediately rushed to the local hospital, Babitha was declared brought dead. The remaining three were then rushed to a hospital in Mangalore, only to be announced that two were already dead.
Scooter rider killed
Within a few hours of the Yekkur mishap, another road accident occurred on the Nethravathi bridge on the outskirts of Mangalore.
A resident of Thokkottu, Carnalia D'Souza (62) died on the spot when the scooter he was riding was hit by a tanker from behind.
