Mangaluru, Jun 14: At least two policemen also suffered injuries during Tuesday’s violence in communally sensitive town of Kalladka in Bantwal taluk of Dkashina Kannada district. The clash erupted in the town following a verbal altercation among youths of two different communities.
According to P Harishekaran, Inspector-General of Police (Western Range), said that Rakshith, PSI, Bantwal Town police station and Manjaiah, CPI, Bantwal, sustained injuries when they attempted to stop two groups from pelting each other with stones.
The IGP however refuted reports that people had been stabbed during Tuesday’s group clash. “Two youths have been hospitalized with injuries. The reason for their injuries is yet to be ascertained. The injured cops are also under treatment,” he said.
Harishekaran, who is camping in the violence hit area, said he had spoken to leaders of Hindu and Muslim communities, who assured him full cooperation to deal with the situation.
“We will deal sternly with lumpen elements who try to foster their devious agenda using the garb of religion,” the IGP said, adding that leaders have assured them of full support in dealing with such elements.
Meanwhile, district police beefed up security, deploying 12 KSRP platoons, 6 DAR platoons and 400 officers drawn from across Western Range.
