Mangaluru, Sept 30: In what can be termed as family suicide pact, a 55-year-old woman and her two children died after jumping into River Nethravathi at Panemangaluru in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district late on Saturday night.
The family, which lived in a rented house in Mysuru's Vijayanagara Stage IV, resorted to the extreme step after the death of the family head. The family's pet dog too jumped into the river but has survived.
Those who committed suicide are Kavitha Mandan (55), her son Kaushik (30), and daughter Kalpitha (20). Kavitha’s husband Kishan Mandan (65) passed away on Friday, September 27. The bodies of the woman and her daughter have been recovered.
It is learnt that after Kishan’s death, his family members were shattered and they decided to end their lives even before performing his last rites. They placed a “miss you” note next to his body before leaving the house on Saturday morning.
On learning about the incident, friends and relatives went to the Mandanna house on Sunday, found Kishan’s body in a white shroud and performed his last rites.
Police sources said Kavitha was a homemaker and her children were engineering graduates. Kavitha and her children left along with their pet dog. Kaushik drove the car. On reaching Panemangaluru, they jumped into the river after hurling dog into it. It is said that the dog had made an effort to save Kavitha by pulling her saree in water.
