Mangalore, Jan 20: Mangalore city police arrested two persons hailing from West Bengal on charges of distributing counterfeit Indian currency notes in Katipalla under the limits of Suratkal police station.
The arrested are Sushanth Mandal (20), son of Binoy Mandal, and Sharath Mandal (19), son of Naresh Mandal, both hailing from Maldah district in West Bengal.
Addressing mediapersons at a press conference at his office here on Monday, Mangalore City Police Commissioner R Hithendra said that the arrested had arrived in Mangalore from West Bengal on January 15 and had rented a room in Katipalla, Suratkal.
“The duo had arrived in the city with the intention of distributing fake currency notes in the region. They would purchase minimal items at stalls and pay for them with a fake note of higher denomination so that they would be returned real currency notes as change by shop-keepers. This way, they had obtained Rs 40,420 as change from several shops so far,” he said.
A total of 81 fake notes of 1000-rupee denomination and 23 fake notes of 500-rupee denomination (totalling Rs 92,500) were seized by the police, along with Rs 40,420 in real currency notes in denominations of 500, 100, 50, 20 and 10.
The serial numbers of the fake notes that were found in the possession of the arrested youth are 5GR, 8GQ, 3DV, 6AR, 1CG, 5KF, 1EQ, 4KM, 5TC, 3TE, 9HR, 7DD, 2CH, 9FC and 2FR.
The duo was arrested red-handed when they tried to pay for a bottle of juice at an eatery in Katipalla with a fake Rs 1,000 currency note on Sunday evening. The observant shop-owner noticed that the security thread of the note was irregular, and immediately informed the Suratkal police of his suspicion, following which they were nabbed.
On interrogation, the youth divulged that they had been handed fake notes for distributed by their acquaintance Saleem from Maldah district in West Bengal.
