Kuwait, Dec 27:  More than one lakh expatriates from Coastal Karnataka, Mangalore and Northern parts of Kerala are disappointed to hear that Air India Express is wrapping up its flight services to Kuwait – Mangalore Sector from February 15, 2014 throwing the travel plans of the passengers into disarray.

Prominent Coastal Karnataka NRIs in Kuwait said that by deciding to wrap up their services to Mangalore route, Air India Express has put the passengers in trouble and the travel woes of Indian expats in Kuwait are surely going to worsen in the coming days during the summer season in 2014 as the summer vacation for thousands of school going children starts during the month of June.

Sensing the aggravated hurdles and to address the public interest, The United Associations of Karnataka, Kuwait (UAKK) an umbrella forum of 12 associations in Kuwait has immediately urged the Union Ministry of civil aviation to instruct Air India Express to retain the regular flight services to Kuwait – Mangalore sector, the only direct travelling option to Mangalore for thousands of Expats from Coastal Karnataka and Northern parts of Kerala region. UAKK has also urged Ministry of Civil Aviation to consider granting permission to other Airlines such as JET AIRWAYS to operate in this sector so that the passengers will have more than one travelling option to Mangalore and Kerala.

Kuwait – Mangalore Scenario:

According to the latest figures, there are more than 700,000 Indians currently living in Kuwait and it is approximated that at least 20-25% are from Coastal Karnataka and Northern Kerala region that travel to Mangalore airport.  At present Air India Express is only the direct travel option to this sector, and if this airline wind up their services, there is no doubt that the hurdles of the passengers will be aggravated.  It is believed that Mangalore sector is one of the revenue generating routes for Air India Express and the reliable sources have said that average traffic flow per flight in this route during the year is 120  which  is an encouraging figure for the Airline operators.  If the services are further improved, a good number of passengers who prefer to travel via Mumbai would definitely opt for convenient Mangalore direct flight which may make this route more attractive to the service providers.

Can Jet Airways fly to this sector?

The answer is 'Yes' subject to certain conditions because of its comparatively good flight services and adherence to its timings.  UAKK has been in touch with Jet Airways management.  Recently UAKK delegation had a meeting with Mr. Bipin Balakrishnan – Sales, Manager, Jet Airways Kuwait office and handed over a memorandum to him which was addressed to Mr. Naresh Goel – Chairman, Jet Airways requesting them to start Jet Airways direct flight services to Kuwait – Mangalore sector as soon as possible.

Jet Airways Management  have informed that they are interested in the sector and they are studying the possibilities of introducing  their flight services from Kuwait to Mangalore via  Abu Dhabi and this will be done as soon as the traffic rights and formalities are sorted out.

Seeking Support from Sunil Jain, Ambassador of India, Kuwait:

UAKK delegation has scheduled a meeting with H.E. Shri Sunil Jain, Ambassador of India, Kuwait at his office on Sunday 29th December, 2013 to seek his guidelines and support in fulfilling the hurdles of Kuwait – Mangalore sector.

Earlier this month, UAKK heads of associations and prominent NRIs of Coastal Karnataka and Northern Parts of Kerala including B.S. Sharafuddin and Sageer Trikaripur, Chairman of KKMA have decided in a UAKK Coordination meeting to intensify the struggle to fulfill the requirements of our worried passengers of Kuwait – Mangalore sector.  The meeting was held on December 12, 2013 at Kids Playgroup, Rumaithiya.

Mangaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar emphasized the urgent need for local job creation and a dedicated tourism policy to address communal tensions and rejuvenate the Dakshina Kannada region.

He spoke during "Ashoka Jan-Mana," a clothing distribution event organized by Rai Estates Educational and Charitable Trust, under the leadership of MLA Ashok Rai, at Kombettu’s taluk stadium in Puttur on Saturday.

“There are challenges to communal harmony across the coastal and interior regions of Dakshina Kannada. To counter these issues, we must provide opportunities for our youth," Shivakumar stated. "The government is considering a specialized tourism policy for the coastal areas to attract more visitors and retain local talent."

Shivakumar expressed concern about a rising trend among local youth to migrate to Saudi Arabia, Mumbai, and Bengaluru due to limited job opportunities in the area. "Communal disturbances have also discouraged students from other districts from enrolling in our institutions, and several banks that originated here have closed down," he said.

Highlighting the region's potential, Shivakumar remarked, “Dakshina Kannada is home to many temples and boasts a rich coastline. Yet, despite Mangaluru having a major port, we still lack five-star hotels. Developing tourism here will be essential for creating jobs and fostering harmony.”

He also hinted at development projects proposed by Ashok Rai for Puttur, which are currently under wraps due to by-election restrictions. Assuring commitment, Shivakumar said, “Although we secured only two seats in Dakshina Kannada, we are committed to developing all constituencies in the region.”

The Deputy Chief Minister concluded with a powerful message on leadership, likening Ashok Rai to a modern embodiment of ancient virtues. “For success, one should have Dharmaraya's righteousness, Karna's generosity, Arjuna's focus, Vidura's ethics, Bhima's strength, and Krishna's strategy. Ashok Rai has all these qualities," he said, praising Rai’s dedication to the people of Dakshina Kannada.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged embezzlement of Waqf properties. This demand follows findings from the Anwar Manippady committee's report, which reveals that while 54,000 acres of land are registered with the Waqf Board, approximately 29,000 acres have been misappropriated.

Capt. Chowta emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, stating, “A comprehensive probe should be conducted based on this report. Those who have illegally encroached on these properties must be held accountable.”

He challenged the Congress party, suggesting that if they genuinely care for the Muslim community and underprivileged women, their members should actively participate in the Joint Parliamentary Committee discussing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. This participation is essential to ensure that Waqf properties are used effectively for community welfare.

The MP criticized the notices served to farmers in Honvada village, Vijayapura, which stated that nearly 1,200 acres of their ancestral land was being reassigned to the Waqf Board. He expressed that this issue arose while the NDA government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is working on amendments to the Waqf Act. He accused the Congress-led state government, particularly Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan, of trying to enforce outdated 50-year-old notifications about Waqf properties. After the farmers raised concerns, Minister M. B. Patil clarified that the confusion was due to an error in the gazette.

Chowta alleged that Congress members in the Joint Parliamentary Committee are obstructing proceedings and causing disruptions. He expressed suspicion that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah might have instructed Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan to implement these outdated notifications regarding Waqf properties. As a result, he demanded the Minister's resignation.

He accused the Congress party of exploiting Muslim voters for the past 75 years without making substantial efforts for their welfare. Furthermore, he highlighted that the BJP is launching a campaign against land jihad, pointing out that the Waqf Board controls one of the largest land banks after the Defence and Railways sectors. Finally, he urged citizens to check the revenue records (RTC) of their land ownership to verify its status.
