Udupi, Oct 25: The general body meeting of the management committee of a mosque at Katapady village in Udupi district on Wednesday took a violent turn as two groups engaged in clashes.
The clash began during the elections to the new Jamaat committee of the Katapady Jumma Masjid. Six people from both groups got admitted to different hospitals after the incident.
According to police, at the general body meeting held at a shed near the mosque, the members of the old committee resigned and elections were being held for the new committee.
But there were clashes between two groups during the elections. Members of one group assaulted members of the other group.
A member of one of the groups came out and opened fire in the air from his gun, and another member of the same group brandished a sword to scare away the other group.
The police, who received information, rushed to the spot, by which time both the groups had dispersed.
As a result of the clash, two members of one group, who were assaulted, M.M. Akbar and Anwar, got admitted to the District Government Hospital here, while A.R. Akbar, Hamid and two others of the other group also got admitted to a private hospital here.
The jurisdictional Kaup Police have registered two separated cases in connection with the incident.
