Udupi, May 31: Vital organs of an accident victim from Udupi district have given eight patients a new lease of life.
According to a press release issued by the Kasturba Hospital here, a person, Sudeep Poojary, 30, was severely injured in a road accident at Brahmavar on May 27. He was rushed to the Kasturba Hospital here but was declared brain dead by the doctors officially at 9.15 p.m. on May 28 under the 1994 Protocols and Procedures of the Human Rights Act.
Subsequently, Sudeep’s elder brothers, Sandeep and Pradeep, expressed their willingness to donate his viable organs. Two corneas, two kidneys, liver, pancreas, heart and lungs were harvested and this helped save the lives of eight people.
As per Jeevasarthakathe (formerly Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK) for Transplantation) protocols and decision, two corneas and two kidneys were retained by Kasturba Hospital here for registered patients while the liver and pancreas were sent to patients of BGS Hospital in Bengaluru and heart valve and lungs to the patients of BGS Hospital in Chennai. The organs were shifted to Bengaluru at 7 a.m. on Thursday, with the support of the Udupi police, from Manipal through Mangaluru International Airport via a Green Corridor.
