“The district administration is carrying out a comprehensive land survey on 1,693.94 acres, which had been documented as government land in survey number 219/1 in Nalkur village. Of this, 1,492.44 acres was deemed forest, while the remaining 201.50 acres was revenue land,” stated the DC in a release.
The District Stone Crushers Regulation Committee (headed by the Deputy Commissioner) had issued leases to 16 stone mining units, which were operating on 24.60 acres of land in the gram panchayat. The units were only mining on this 24.60 acres of land.
The committee had notified 14.75 acres of land in Nalkur village as safer crusher zone as per Karnataka Regulation of Stone Crushers Act, 2011. The committee had given licences to five crusher units to operate in the safer crusher zone, where the mined stones were brought and crushed.
Two firms were given temporary licences for crushing stones for public purpose, that is, for widening of national highways and for railway work, as per Section 7 of the Act. The areas notified for stone mining and safer crusher zone had more of stone boulders and less of trees, the release said.
