Bengaluru, Aug 30: A double graduate from the coastal district of Udupi has been detained by the police for allegedly issuing a series of bomb threats to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) and KSR City railway station in a week through telephone.

The accused has been identified as K Aditya Rao (34), a resident of Manipal in Udupi district. He holds a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering (BE) and a master degree in business administration (MBA).

The police are yet to find out the intention behind Rao’s hoax calls though he claimed during interrogation that he grew frustrated after KIA rejected his applications for the post of security guard twice.

Kala Krishnamurthy, deputy commissioner of police (northeast), said they are verifying the antecedents of the accused. Rao had allegedly made threat calls to KIA on August 21 and 27 and to Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna railway station on August 27.

Why he wanted security guard’s post?

Police officials are verifying Rao’s claim that he had twice applied for the job. “Why would a person with such high qualifications apply for the post of security guard? We’ve asked KIA officials to trace his applications, if any,” they said.

Rao had worked as a junior manager (sales) with a multinational bank, which has a branch on MG Road, in 2008. “After three years, he joined another bank as sales manager. Due to a technical problem, he quit the company in 2014 and took up the job of a security guard at an educational institution in Udupi,” police said.

From bank manager to cook

His family members were upset after Rao chose to become a guard. “Rao’s father is a retired private company employee and mother is a homemaker. His younger brother works with a private company in Dakshina Kannada district. Forced by his family, Aditya Rao quit the job at the school and became a cook at a mutt in Udupi. Again his parents objected to this and sent him to Bengaluru in May, asking him to find a better job,” police added.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reminded that V D Savarkar was not against cow slaughter as he himself was non-veg eater, PTI reported on Thursday.

"As a Brahmin he was eating meat, and he was openly propagating eating meat," said the minister at an event in Bengaluru.

Reacting to Gundu Rao's claim, BJP MP Anurag Thakur called Congress a "factory of lies" as he warned that India won't tolerate any disrespect towards Savarkar.

"By disrespecting Veer Savarkar they have shown that they don't respect freedom fighters. During the Congress government, Sardar Bhagat Singh was termed a separatist in textbooks...By making those who want to break the nation join the congress party, Rahul Gandhi is taking forward the ideology of 'tukde tukde' and he is a 'modern Jinnah' who speaks ill of the country abroad...," he said.

Meanwhile, a court in Maharashtra's Nashik district summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi earlier this week in a defamation case filed against him for his alleged objectionable remarks against the Hindutva ideologue.

The complainant, who is the director of an NGO, claimed he watched a press conference addressed by Gandhi in Hingoli and also a speech made by the Congress leader in November 2022.

He alleged that Gandhi, on the two occasions, by his words and visual representations knowingly harmed the reputation of Veer Savarkar and also tried to defame the latter's image in the society.

According to the complainant, Gandhi said "Savarkar is BJP and RSS jin" which was defamatory in nature.
