Bengaluru, Nov 3: In major embarrassment for VS Ugrappa, the Congress candidate for Saturday’s Ballari Lok Sabha bypoll, a court in Doddaballapura directed officials to confiscate movable assets at the MLC’s residence in Bengaluru after he failed to deposit Rs 94,925 to the court as compensation to a road accident victim.
But Ugrappa claimed he was unaware of the court ruling and said the case was being raked up on the bypoll eve to defame him.
The order was passed by IV Additional District and Sessions judge, Shuklaksha Palan, on October 31 in a case that dates back to 2010 and involves S Balaji, a local from Doddaballapura.
Balaji’s advocate Anand Kumar, said Ugrappa’s multiutility vehicle (MUV) had rammed Balaji’s two-wheeler from the rear. Balaji fell and sustained injuries on his hand and head. Kumar said Ugrappa had shifted Balaji to Doddaballapura government hospital in his MUV and then continued on his journey.
“Balaji had to foot the entire bill for his treatment,” Kumar said. “In 2012, we approached the court seeking compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh and 18% interest to be paid from the date of filing the petition. The case went to trial, but Ugrappa did not respond to any of the notices issued by the court nor did he appear for any of the hearings. On October 31 last year, the court directed Ugrappa to pay Rs 67,500 (6% interest) and the expenses of the advocate as compensation.”
When Ugrappa failed to pay up or heed the court’s directions, Kumar filed an executive petition. On Wednesday (Oct 31), the court directed officials to seize movable properties worth Rs 94,925 from Ugrappa’s residence to match the compensation (including advocates fees and interest).
