Mangalore, Feb 11: Even as the coastal town of Ullal is returning to normalcy after recent communal tensions, the horror stories of police brutality against innocent citizens including women are being revealed by the victims.
“They (police) barged into the houses belonging to Muslims in Kodi vicinity of Ullal at around 11 p.m. on Thursday (February 6) and assaulted the family members including women and children,” said one of the women attending the press meet organized by local unit of Popular Front of India in the city on Tuesday.
“We are worried. We can't trust these police. They are targeting us for no fault of our own. They are threatening and beating the male members of our family and women are in insecure state,” said another burkha-clad woman.
Sayyed, one of the witnesses of the khaki atrocity, said that the police assaulted his wife and children before his own eyes. “Though we pleaded for help, nobody came forward to help us,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, PFI district president A M Ataullah, said that the police had barged into at least 20 houses belonging to Muslims by breaking open the door in the mid night. “They have brutally assaulted innocents including minors and elders. In few houses police went on to the extent of assaulting women,” he said.
He said that a few police entered the premises of Badriya Juma Masjid in Kotepura vicinity and thrashed Imam of the Masjid, Abdul Hameed Musliyar without any reason.
“One house belonging to Mogaveera community, one Masjid and 12 houses belonging to Muslim community have been attacked by the miscreants during the recent clashes in Ullal and surrounding areas. However, police have deliberately targeted innocent Muslims. They have arrested 45 members belonging to Muslim community and 16 members belonging to other community,” he said.
