Mangalore, Dec 9: Acting on a complaint pertaining to unauthorized connection to Manipal College of Dental Sciences, officials from the vigilance department of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (MESCOM) conducted a raid at Manipal College of Dental Sciences located in the premises of Kasturba Medical College Hospital, Attavar here on Monday morning.
The team of Mescom was led by Mescom Deputy Superintendent Vinay Gaonkar who inspected the meter readings in the premises.
Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, Mr Gaonkar said that since the dental college had not obtained a valid license for supply of electricity, the vigilance department would conduct a check on usage of electricity in the college.
According to sources, KMC Hospital and its dental college, which were located in two adjacent buildings, had only one electricity meter and electricity was being used illegally.
“Electricity is being used illegally in the dental college, as the building does not have a valid electrical connection from Mangalore City Corporation (MCC). This has been going on from the past two years and the College has utilized electricity worth Rs 8 crore so far through illegal means. The college will have to pay penalty for the same,” said P S Haneef Saheb, a person who fights against civic irregularities in Mangalore.
The surprise check was jointly conducted by the Mescom police and vigilance department.
Rs 3.47 crore penalty
Upon raiding and inspecting the institutions and calculating the electricity utilized, the vigilance squad had recommended the Mescom to impose a penalty of Rs 3.47 crore on the management for using electricity without the valid licence.
