The deceased has been identified as Naveen Poojar (43), a resident of Ashraya colony at Kumpala, which falls under the limits of Ullal police station. He was a daily wage labourer.
Naveen was suffering from fever since a few days and on June 1, he was taken to Wenlock Hospital. On June 2, he was subjected to blood test, the reports of which came out to be normal. On June 3, Naveen was produced to the Court and his judicial custody was extended. On June 4, by afternoon, Naveen's health deteriorated and hence he was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
Background
On May 20, Naveen was caught by the Ullal police, near Thokkottu Overbridge for suspiciously roaming in the area. Since then he was in judicial custody and he was produced before the court on June 3. Since there was nobody to release him on bail, his judicial custody was extended by the court.
Though he was arrested on May 20, there was no information about the arrest to his family. Naveen was an alcoholic and due to work he used to stay away from home for week together. Due to this reason the family members had thought that he was away on work.
Only after Naveen's death, the family discovered that he was arrested by the police.
Ullal Block Congress Backward Community wing President Dinesh Kumpala has said that if at all the police had informed the family about his arrest, the family could have had arranged for his bail or at least could have met him before his death.
“The exact reason for the death has not been ascertained. Today (June 5), a post mortem will be conducted and the reason for the death will be known,” said Dinesh
No injuries
Regional Medical Officer Saroja has said that the reason for death is not known as of now. However, when Naveen was brought to the hospital there were no injuries on his body. Hence it can be said that he died of some disease,” she said adding that since there are doubts raised that it is a lock up death, the Post Mortem will be conducted in presence of the Tahshildar with entire video recording of the procedure.
