Varanasi, Jun 12: Even a union minister is not safe from eve-teasers in Uttar Pradesh under the rule of chief minister Yogi Adityanath? Anupriya Patel, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, who was travelling in a car between Aurai and Mirzamurad regions last night were targeted by the eve-teasers.
Patel was returning to Varanasi after attending programmes at her Lok Sabha constituency Mirzapur. Suddenly, three men travelling in a car without a number plate tried to overtake the cavalcade of the minister. The trio was warned by the minister's security personnel.
However, the accused persons ignored all warnings, hurled indecent comments towards Patel and misbehaved with the security men.
The minister complained about the matter to Varanasi SSP R K Bhardwaj, who immediately launched a drive to trace the whereabouts of the trio. The trio has now been arrested by Mirzamurad police and their car confiscated, the police said.
When Yogi Adityanath was sworn in as the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in 2014, one of his top priorities was “ensure the safety of college-going girls" and "check eve-teasing". Anti-Romeo squads were created to ensure the safety of women. However, situation has worsened in last one and a half years.
In April 2017, four students of Delhi University had stalked Union Minister Smriti Irani's car in Lutyens Delhi in an "inebriated" state. The incident took while she was returning home in Chanakyapuri from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The students were later arrested for allegedly stalking and outraging the modesty of a woman and released on bail.
Earlier this year, in April, the Delhi police filed charge sheet against the four people for allegedly misbehaving and stalking Union Minister Smriti Irani.
